Windows 10: Toshiba - Function or FN keys not working? Try this...

Recently I had to completely start over on my laptop. Full delete, format and reinstall of windows twas the only was to defeat the 'endless reboot loop'. Yes, I tried everything I could find... but after a fortnight of trying, retrying and working through countless errors and fixes that lead to more errors. Even after all that there was installation issues and blah, blah, blah...


Sobutanyways, I finally got it up and running and thought that all was good. However, the F1 - F12 buttons would not perform their special function without first pressing the FN button first. I still had to press FN for volume, brightness, and so on. I tried changing the settings in BIOS and a number of other alleged fixes I found on many sites for this issue but to no avail. Finally, by looking on Toshiba's website, I came across something that immediately fixed the problem!

What to do to fix this issue:


1. Go to the link listed below to download the Toshiba Function Key Utility.

2. Run the downloaded file.

3. Reset, as it suggests.

4. Enjoy the glorious usage of your FN buttons. ^_^

New laptop FN keys not working [Solved]

Ummm, that is normal - depending on the function you are doing (assuming I understand what you are saying).

On a notebook, the Fn key is like a shift key that switches in a different set of functions for the F-Keys.

For example, in Windows pressing the F5 key typically refreshes the display. In File Explorer, it will refresh the displayed files. In a browser, it will refresh (reload) the webpage. But pressing Fn + F5 does something different, depending on your notebook. On my Toshiba notebook, if I hold down the Fn key and press F5, it switches the video output of my notebook between the notebook monitor, a connected external monitor, or both.

Exactly what I was used to do, pressing the FN key with an F key but that didn't work....
If I press the FN key I get f1 f2 f3 and so on.

It was just the other way around, but I figured it out now.*Smile

 

Use function keys without fn

I have a problem. I am having trouble enabling function keys without holding the FN. It previously worked since I bought it. But this year I had to reinstall the operating system due to an infection I couldn't remove. After the reinstall, I realized that
I can't use the volume keys and the brightness keys without using FN. FN is enabled. First I looked up the problem on my laptop's brand website, and they suggested me to download the appropriate application to enable this function. After I installed it, I
couldn't locate it. It didn't even show up on Start menu, neither it showed on the search companions. Next I called the brand company's technical support. I asked the person to give me the path where the application's path, but he told me it was corrupted,
which it's not because it shows that it's installed on the Programs and Features list. The support group offered me support with over $60, which I can't afford. He just asked me to looked up the problem myself online, but one of the solutions gave me alternate
software to install, but it didn't work. Next I went to the Settings and I tried to find "Function Keys" but no result. I own Windows 10 on a Toshiba Satellite C55.

Anyone who does know how to enable function keys WITHOUT using FN keys? I am really frustrated.
