Windows 10: Transfer of Windows 10 license rules

I wonder if anyone can help confirm what can and cannot be done with a W10 license.


My current windows 10 license is an upgrade from a W7 OEM license I had when i bought my PC 5.5 years ago.


I now want to upgrade the Motherboard and understand I need to purchase a new W10 license. as OEM is not transferable and tied to that PC. Ok, so understand this.


If I buy a retail license, does this mean if I upgrade again in say 5 years , I can transfer this existing license to my new PC?


A PC builder has told me that with W10, regardless of your license you have it is tied to the Motherboard. This seem to contradict what I think I have elsewhere seen online, so now not sure if I am missing something or they just have interested in selling a new license with every build they do.


I would be grateful if someone can clarify the position on Windows license transfers.

i bought the license. My laptop was originally loaded with win 7 and was upgraded free couple of months.

in this case, if i understand you correctly, i can transfer with below steps. Right.?

does OS upgrades if my activation key is changed.

Windows 10 upgrade license

The interesting question is that: the upgrade takes place before 29 of July. If I upgrade the PC (change the MB), and I transfer the Win 8.1 license to this new PC (cause 8.1 is retail FPP), will I be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free? Or a upgrade license must be bought?
