Windows 10: Transfer PURCHASED Digital Licenses to New Device

A year or so ago I bootcamped two of my Macs and purchased digital licenses for them. Before unbootcamping them, I released the licenses. Looking at the "my devices" I still see the two formally bootcamped Macs listed. I'd like to use those licenses on VM devices. How do I do that? Again, I paid for the licenses - they weren't upgrades - they weren't OEM. They're not in use and I paid retail for them.

Transfer digital license from old PC to New one.

You would have to first ensure the Digital License is linked to your Microsoft Account. See instructions how to do that. You can then use the Troubleshooter on the new computer after installing Windows 10 to restore the license.

Please note, if your license was upgraded from a OEM preinstalled Windows 7 or Windows 7 license, it is not transferable.

Transfer Digital License To A New PC

No, you do not need the machine to be online to transfer the License. The troubleshooter helps you in this regard.

Activation depends on what type of license you have of Windows 7/8/10.

If Windows 7/8/10 came preinstalled with the computer, that is called an OEM license. For an OEM license, the license dies as soon as Motherboard dies. So essentially it is non-transferable. If that is the case you need to get a new license.

However, this is not same for retail licenses i.e. you purchased the license through Microsoft store. That does carry transfer rights. If that is the case, please see the below steps:

Run the activation troubleshooter on the new device using the below steps:

Go to Settings>Update and security>Activation and run the troubleshooter. and select I recently changed hardware on this device.

(Please note that Activation troubleshooter requires you to have digital license linked to Microsoft Account.)

Digital license transfer to another account

New computer need new Windows 10 or a retail purchased license to transfer activation.

You can not transfer Digital License from one computer to another.

The Digital License comes from the activation of the computer.

If the old computer had the Windows installed when purchased then it has an OEM license and it is tied to that motherboard and can not be transferred.
