  1. transferring files to new computer

I'm new to transferring things from my old computer to my new one and I'm lost. I spoke with a couple of peopled and they made it sound easy and now I don't know what to do. Here is what I've done until now.

    • I purchased a new desk top and need to transfer my entire lap top material to my desk top.
    • I was told to get an external hard drive at least 1 terabyte.
    • Then plug into lap top and go into Internet Explorer.
    • From there create 2 separate windows, one from the original and the second to have the external hard drive.
    • Next create a new folder name then click and drag everything from the lap top over to the external drive.
    • After that plug the external drive into my desk top and download into new computer. Also to create a folder and put on desk top screen.
    • I am using Microsoft Windows 10 which came downloaded on the new desk top. I also had this on my previous lap top.
    • I was also using other programs on my lap top, like Google Chrome for primary browser, Outlook for email and a few other third party programs.
    • Also I don't know how to move my email contacts over to the new computer. I use Outlook as my email client but I use a different email browser as the primary.
    • When I dragged everything over to the new desk top I didn't know how to open then. Also when I try to open some files and photo files there is a RED X displayed next to them. When I try to open any photos it asked me "How do you want to open this file?"
    • My biggest frustration is I don't know how to access/open any of the files on my new computer, also how to get some of the other programs like Adobe to work on the lap top.
    • The more I try to look up things on my own the more confused I get. I'm sorry I know this is a lot. But I could really use some help.
    • These are the only things I can think of right now. Although I have so many things I have questions about.
    • Thank you so much and I hope you can help me navigate through these initial things.

    :)

transfer files between computers on a home network

I don't know why this is so hard to do but I would like to transfer files between a desktop PC running windows 10 pro and a laptop running windows 10 home. I would like to transfer files in both directions. Both computers are on the same home network and are connected wirelessly.

Could some one provide either specific step by step instructions on how to do this (I googled and found a countless list of instructions that don't work)

or a link to a reference.

    Thanks,

I don't know if this is possible but it would be nice to see the computer sending the desired file in the explorer file manager of the computer receiving the desired file and then under the computer see a list
    of shared files and folders.

Again, this seems like such a reasonable way of sharing files and folders. Shouldn't there be a simple way to do this?

    Need Help Files Transfer

I have a computer running Windows XP Home Edition. That computer has two internal HDDs:

The 1st HDD is C:\ that running Windows. And it has 20GB total of capacity.
The 2nd HDD is D:\ that is empty. And it has 90GB total of capacity.

The C:\ drive is almost run out of space (full). Is there a way I can transfer everything in the C:\ drive to the D:\ drive and begin to use the D:\ drive from there on as primary drive?
Can the Windows Files Transfer feature in XP transfer everything I have in C:\ to D:\? If it cannot, then which way can I use to perform the above step?

    Thank you.

    Cable to transfer files

OMG. I have never met anyone who actually bought one of those file transfer things.

Firewire will do the same as USB, but faster, so will a cheap crossover cable. I can wlak you through the steps of moving data so you will not miss a beat.

Anything more than $10 to buy a cable is too much.
