    Troubleshoot Reset This PC

Oh, I've been waiting for over a day, so that's not a problem. But hopefully, one of those other 'members with much better and superior knowledge than' you can throw some of that better and superior knowledge my way. You do realize, don't you, that you merely teased me with that whole 'better method' stuff. When I pressed you for details you folded like a cardboard house in a rainstorm.
I'm not RUNNING anything. I'm merely following Brink's tutorial on a W10 Repair Install. The only change I've made to the laptop is to disable the secure boot in the BIOS. I am currently performing Step 6, sub-step D:
    6. D) Windows 10 will now start downloading. I'm merely downloading, and am looking at many more hours before I begin the install.

No. I was not teasing you. I never bull-shit to anyone in this forum. If I can't help, I'll say so first.

I am under the impression that you are running the Repair Install.
And I was waiting to see if that will fixed the problem.

Here is the solution to fix " source files not found "........................

You need the Install.wim which can be obtained by downloading the ISO from Tech Bench.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/techbench

Once you have the iso downloaded, right click at the ISO > click Mount > leave it there
Then open the elevated command prompt and copy and paste this................

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:H:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

Note : H is the drive where the iso is mounted. Change it if your driver letter is different.

When it is completed, you should get the report that the operation is successful.
Now run the sfc /scannow again. It should say " No integrity violation " this time.

Okay.... the download took about 13 hours. The updates took about 1. The actual install took over 2 hours.

    I should be good.

    I am not.

    • I still can't left-click the Start Button. Right-click works as it should but left-click is dead - at least as far as the Start Button
    • The reinstall removed IE11 from the taskbar. Mind you, it didn't replace it with that ridiculous Edge, but it did remove IE11. If I repin it to the taskbar it does work, but it adds another IE11 icon to that taskbar
    • The Windows Store is pinned to the taskbar but it's blank - no picture of the white shopping bag on a green background. Just an empty space. If I hover the mouse over that empty space, the square turns gray. If that Store empty space is the last item on the taskbar, hovering the mouse will display the word Store. If I move the pinned IE11 icon to the right of the Store empty space NONE of the taskbar icons display anything while hovering. AND clicking on that gray space does nothing
    • I cannot right click the IE11 taskbar icon to unpin it. Actually I cannot right-click any items on the taskbar. Left-clicking works on all items other than the Store
    • The Windows 7 games have disappeared again. However the exe file - Win7GamesForWin10-Setup is still on the desktop and still will let me right-click on it and run it as an administrator. Are these games going to disappear EVERY TIME Windows 10 does an update
    • The search box to the right of the Start Button is unusable. I can't type anything in it. Ditto for right-clicking Start and left-clicking Search
    • The New Notifications icon in the System Tray doesn't work
    • Without a Start Button, a Search or Notifications I can't display the Build Number, to see if it has updated

So there's nothing horrible happening - just a bunch of irritants that I'd like help with. The computer is much faster, so that is good news

You asked me to show you how to fix " Source files could not be found ".
    I did.
    Why not use it ?

Try creating a new local user account. Change account type to administrator. Log in to the new local user account and see if the problems persist. It could be your user account is corrupted, not the Windows install.

Well, you had said that it was too late when you assumed I was installing Windows. Since the download did complete, and I did re-install Windows, I assumed that any problems with system files would've been automatically resolved.

But I'll try it. Looks like it's going to be at least a half hour to download. It's only giving me about 37 KB/sec

It is possible, as suggested to you, that your user account is corrupted.
Let's see what is the result after running the dism command.

This miserable Windows 10 doesn't let you add a new account from Control Panel/User Accounts. It wants you to do everything from PC Settings. If I go into User Accounts and click Manage another account, and then click on Add a New User in PC Settings, nothing happens. At the top left of the screen, just to the right of Manage Accounts it will put the phrase (Not Responding), which is there for a second, and then.... nothing. All probably for the same reason that the Start Button, Search and Notifications don't work.

At least there's a glimmer of light. I enabled the Administrator account, logged into it, AND the Start Button works. Hooray!
But... I clicked Settings, Accounts, Other Users, and then clicked Add Someone Else to This PC. I am getting something - but it's just the blue circle. For close to 10 minutes. If I move the mouse off the clickable box the blue circle goes away. Moving it back into that box then does nothing unless I re-click, which again show the blue circle, etc, etc.

I used Windows Key + R, and typed control userpasswords2. This let me create a new local account.

I made that new local account an administrator, de-activated the Administrator account and copied the desktop icons from the corrupted account to the new local account. Everything seems to be working, except that I'm always getting this UAC box to come up (when I open an elevated command prompt, for example). It shows me the new account with a Password box. Since I didn't create a password for the new local account, I just have to hit enter. Never had to do this before.

The UAC prompt is normal. That is the protection against Trojans and viruses from performing actions in the background as administrator.

I realize that. It's the password box that I've never seen before.
