Windows 10: Trying and failing to update Windows to 2004 or 20H2 release

Hello,


I am at my wits end. I was on Windows 1909, and wanted to update to the latest 20H2 release so I could stay supported. Everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong.


I have tried multiple times to update to both 2004 and 20H2. Every time, the installation fails with the following error message:


0xC1900101 - 0x20017 : The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation


Based on some Googling, it seems that there's a driver issue causing this, but I cannot figure out what it is. For reasons that make absolutely no sense, despite being an administrator on my own PC I do not have permissions to view the logs in the Panther directory. In addition, during one of the rollbacks, Windows somehow unhelpfully rolled me back to version 1903. I have no idea why, but of course now this means I won't get any security patches after Tuesday.


While Windows update once offered me the upgrade to 20H2, now no matter what I do I can't get it. I need a functional computer and am getting extremely frustrated. How do I get this update to complete? How do I even get it offered to me again?


I uninstalled my security software, and pretty much everything else I was running.

Windows Updates failed to instal

I just did step one and they have just all installed.... thank you so much.... it was quite frustrating having that update window pop up every 5 minutes and failing to instal every time

Windows 10 2004 update fails to install - Memory Management?

1. Go here

check on installed updates in your computer that you have the latest servicing stack for - presumably 1909

If not download and install from the catalogue link - 64based update - second on list.

2. Then try update to 2004 after complete shutdown
Step 1: Open Start menu, select Power button.

Step 2: Press and hold the Shift key on keyboard, while clicking on Shut down, and then release the Shift key to perform a full shutdown.

OR as you may know a restart is a complete shutdown.

IF the 2004 update is offered on updates as the item - feature update to 2004 when you are ready etc.
The make sure beforte you click that - that you have clicked search for updates and install all - before trying 2004.

If that does not work clean boot it and then try the update

20H2 update via update assistant not working for me

This is likely because you are using Windows 10 Pro for workstations. As you have the 2004 release, I suggest using the enablement package to download 20H2 which is smaller in size - see method 4 here:
