Windows 10: Trying to format SSD in Laptop

I've been having issues with my Acer Aspire randomly freezing without any explanation, and have decided that maybe formatting the main SSD I put in it might help. It has both a HDD and SSD and I use the SSD for everything.

When I go to format the SSD, it gives me the following error :

"You cannot format this volume - It contains the version of Windows that you are using. Formatting this volume could cause your computer to stop working...."

My question is, what do I need to do in order to get past this, and save my Windows at the same time. Is there a way I can move it onto the hard drive and then format the SSD? Could someone point me in the direction of how to do that as well?

Run CMD


1. diskpart
2. list disk

Then in the 3º step, put the correct number of disk in the list for the usb flash (if it's listed in disk 3, then you'll have to write select disk 3).

2. select disk #
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

with that commands you will format the flash drive in fat32, if you have a large drive you can select also "format fs=ntfs" in step 7.

Laptop driver/reformat question

This is excellent advice. Writing down the list of installed devices prior to re-formatting will save you a lot of heartache. With that list, you won't have to try to figure out exactly which wireless card or web cam driver you need since there will likely be several to choose from.

 

Format SSD drive or any drive

Think of a hard drive or SSD as a book . . .

A Quick Format basically deletes the contents page (File Allocation Table), whereas a Long Format will also delete all the pages (Files)

If a quick format is taking 2 hours on your SSD and you are experiencing problems with Windows, when only performing a Quick Format, then I would suggest the formatting operation is not the problem, most likely that SSD has a problem. A Quick format on that
drive, should take approx. 10 minutes . . .
