Turn On or Off Recent Items and Frequent Places in Windows 10

Windows 10 no longer updates %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items if you
Windows 10 > Settings > Personalization > Start > Turn OFF Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar

Therefore, that setting has to be ON in order for Recent Items to exist.

Unfortunately along with Recent Items (files) - Windows 10 keeps a track of each and every web page you visit and prominently displays the web pages you visited when you right click on the browser in your Task Bar...

So we are faced with theoretically figuring out what part of registry Windows 10 uses to display the web pages and possibly *ONLY* blocking that part while allowing the Recent Items (files) to still be displayed.
This very well may be impossible, and I understand that.

But this is a pretty big deal. I don't even mind that web page history is accessible, but it's one thing for an effort to be made to get to it, and another for it to be on *Permanent Display* every single time you right click on any browser window in the task bar. There definitely should have been a registry entry that controls that SEPARATELY from Recent Files that were opened. *Sad

  2. Hmmm - Am I missing something here?
I don't get any web page history in my "Recent Items' in using 'Classic Shell', only docs such as PDF, XLS, docx, sip, and so on. The web pages only appear in the drop down called "Favorites". And those are not history, they are the same web pages I have in the browser bookmarks.

    Hey Brink -
Must be a misunderstanding. I'm not looking to show websites in Recent Items - I don't want them there. I was simply replying/confirming to the post how my Classic Shell works.
I was also trying to get clarification from him because I don't see (in Classic Shell) what he sees.

    Cheers!

Sure. I would be glad to clarify: This is the Recent Items Classic Shell entry, which shows recently opened files [good]:

Turn On or Off Recent Items and Frequent Places in Windows 10 [IMG]

However, when you right click on your browser in the Task Bar, all your recently visited *web* pages show up. [bad].

The objective would be to *only* have Recent Items [recently opened files] show up, and not recent web pages...

  6. I see.. Ok. From the task bar -
    > When I R-click on I.E. it shows me web sites.
    > When I R-click on Windows Explorer it shows me folder, not files.

I don't get recent web site anywhere else.

Could this be a setting choice in C-Shell that is not set for you? There are many settings in that app.

Correct, the only place to see web pages is where you mentioned, you are correct. That is what I would like to turn OFF.
However, I would like to *keep* Recent Items showing up (highlighted option) in the screen shot above.
So: YES Recent Items and NO Recent web pages is what I would like.

Ivo, the Classic Shell creator correctly pointed out to me that this has nothing to do with Classic Shell. This is a Windows issue since this Windows 10 option controls BOTH:

Windows 10 > Settings > Personalization > Start > Turn ON/OFF Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar

It appears there is no Windows setting or registry key that SEPARATELY controls Recent Items from Recent Web pages.
That is what I would like, to turn OFF recent web pages but keep Recent Items ON.

OK, So now I see better what you are asking for. I believe this is what they now call "Jump List" - and there may be a couple of places where to tweak this.
    So first take look here:
    http://techdows.com/2014/10/windows-...-explorer.html
I 'think' that this includes some of what you are asking for. However, in my W10, I don't get the "Start Menu" tab in the properties box - not sure why.

In case you have not been in this section, and if the above does not take care of it, go to "Personalization" > "Start".
There you will see several slider buttons - I believe the one you are wanting to adjust is "Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or on the taskbar".

Let me know if that helped...
    Cheers!

    sunnyorlando, read the thread posts.
Look at the post directly above yours.

Windows 10 > Settings > Personalization > Start > Turn ON/OFF Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar

controls *BOTH*. It is an ON/OFF button for BOTH, the goal is to have one ON and the other OFF, not *both*.

Your link also talks about controlling both at the same time. So both ON or both OFF. We already know how to control both at the same time. That's not a problem to do.

Turn On or Off Recent Items and Frequent Places in Windows 10

Hi Brink, I'm looking @ .chm, trying to get hh.exe (the built-in chm viewer) to remember recent (.chm) docs, with jumplist.... just like notepad does with .txt (but not with .reg grrr)

It looks like this isn't possible, and that (hopefully) a substitute-app is the best workaround....

anyone got any ideas if notepad (& others?) can be modded to remember all opened files?

    I can
pin hh.exe to start menu, but it has no recent, unlike notepad, paint, even control panel...

Reluctant to rem hh.exe from HostApps @ HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileAssociation, doubt it'll have the desired magical effect of making .chm's pinnable..

    Hello Jonny,

I'm not aware of a way to have jump lists available for items you "Pin to Start". *Sad

As title says instead of opening the folder a click on a Frequent places folder in File Explorer runs takeownership command.
Weird. I have no clue on how to get it to default behavior ie opening the folder
Thanks to the tuto I can clear and even prevent the Frequent places to fill in but I'd rather have it working properly.
    Begging for help. Thanks

    Edit
Only when click done from File Explorer Frequent places in taskbar
OK when done from File in File Explorer menu then folder opens
In case it helps to point to the right registry key.

    Cheers
