Two HP Compaq 8200 Ultra-Slim Desktop PC's were recently updated from Windows/7 Pro SP1 (x86) and Windows/7 Pro SP1 (x64) operating systems using 32-bit and 64-bit USB Memory Sticks created by the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool. Windows 10 Pro works very well on these older PC's which are running Intel i3-2100 2nd Generation CPU's with 4 GByte (x86 machine) and 8 GByte (x64 machine) Main Memory with 250 GByte Hard Disk Drives. One PC has USB Mouse and Keyboard (x86 PC) and the other uses PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard (x64 PC). Both are connected to Cisco switches via 100-Mbit Fast Ethernet which allow Internet access at high speeds. Both machines were REMOVED from the company Domain before upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. All admin ID's are Local ID's (NO Microsoft Account involvement).



The issue is that using either the Restart GUI or "shutdown -r -t 5" from an Administrator Command Prompt, the system shows the Restart panel and then after the video signal is lost, appears to GO TO SLEEP for 90+ seconds before any Hard Drive Activity is initiated and the system successfully restarts Windows 10 Pro. BOTH H-P systems act like this. An "sfc /scannow" was performed on both systems and no problems were found. An examination of the Event Viewer Administrative events showed little helpful information, complaining about Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) not running due to a shutdown in progress. These events were deleted by disabling the VSS service temporarily. The Windows/7 Pro SP1 systems had NO restart issues when they were running on these PC's. BIOS settings disable all of the USB/Network boot devices in the H-P EFI section leaving Hard Disk SATA0 as the Primary boot device. Both PC's are set this way as an attempt to alleviate this Restart issue. Neither PC needed these settings for Windows/7 Pro SP1 restarts, as they were left at the manufacturer's settings for Windows/7.


Fast Shutdown is DISABLED on the Power settings panel for both PC operating systems. During normal Power On, Hard Disk Activity and Video Signal generation are almost IMMEDIATE at Power Button depression and the Windows 10 systems come up FAST to the login screen. This test has been repeated over and over with the same successful results from the Power On button.

It appears that the lack of Hard Drive activity is on the "shutdown" side of the restart effort. Attempts to force the system down may result in a "Blue Screen of Death" on power on, which after a clean power off and on cycle results in Windows 10 Pro coming up just fine without issues. I've had 8 years experience with Win/XP Pro SP3, Win/7 Pro, Windows/Server 2003, Windows/Server 2012 R2, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 Pro (many Features) and recently Windows/Server 2016 plus over 35 years as an IBM engineer and software tester. THIS one has me stumped!

HP Elite 8300 Ultra-Slim Desktop Plan

Hi,

So this Morning I got to browsing and came upon a HP Elite 8300 Ultra-Slim Desktop with a MXM Slot to Add a Graphics Card! Mainly those slots are meant for Laptops but HP found a way.

I plan to just buy the MB and have my Friend create a case for it and buy a MXM Card later on

 

Is Windows-10 is preventing we from using Windows-7 on my PC?

Windows 10 has nothing to do with the hardware/firmware accessing the hard drive.

Which PC do you have, you weren't specific:

HP Compaq Elite 8300 Convertible Minitower PC
HP Compaq Elite 8300 Microtower PC
HP Compaq Elite 8300 Small Form Factor PC
HP Compaq Elite 8300 Ultra-slim PC
HP Compaq Elite 8300 All-in-One Desktop PC

Since you say the Win 7 HDD is GPT then the firmware must be UEFI rather then BIOS. Try going into Setup and loading defaults, see if that makes a difference. If not, power down, remove the power cord, remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard, press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds. Put the CMOS battery back in, plug in the power cord, power up.

You should get a message about UEFI, press F1 to continue, F2 to enter setup. Press F2.
Load defaults.
Set date and time.
Save and Exit.

See if that makes a difference.
