Windows 10: Unable to apply latest updates either KB4571756 or Windows 10 20H2 update WIndows Update...

Hi,


From Windows 10 20H1 update currently running on my Surface Pro 5th gen 2017, I am unable to apply further important updates, especially KB4571756 or Windows 10 20H2 update.

Within Windows update, I get error 0xe0000003 after facing the same errors as MicroMan624 in thisthread.

Quoting him :

" The same pattern is repeated every time I try to install the update.

1. The update completes and I am prompted to restart.

2. During the shutdown phase, the update gets to 7% and then ends.

3. The computer reboots, and a message appears that the update could not be completed and is being rolled back. "


I have also tried direct upgrade from both the Upgrade Assistant and the Media Creation Tool by choosing to "upgrade this PC".

Each attempts ends with a BSOD, usually between 85 and 90% of the procedure. Interestingly, the reported error is not always the same. I faced :

* SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

* KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE

* KERNEL_MODE_HEAP_CORRUPTION


All drivers have been updated with the Surface Pro Update 18362_20.081.13957.0 driver package. Additionally the latest Intel drivers were installed through igfx_win10_100.8853.


Windows rarely crashes on this machine, aside from these upgrades attempts. The device manager displays this for some time much earlier than 20H1 update :





...which I don't really like, but the Surface is running just fine and I can enter to and tweak the UEFI.

Got assistance from Microsoft... Despite the fact that I explained my problem, all they did was... Having me run the Update Assistant and the Media Creation Tool, resulting in yet another BSOD :

Windows 10 Update

Well just noticed a pretty large one pop up coming in at 914MB, seems it makes some pretty serous updates.

Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.

I hear this only applies to Pro and Enterprise editions. But I can't verify that.

 

Win10: windows update stuck at never ending loop ?

When in win10:

• Update&security -> Windows update -> Finding update... .... .... ....

Planning to download the latest Win10.ISO (vers.1803) and manually update:
- Then wait that my ordered new SSD arrives and clone the old HDD to it.
