  1. Unable to change default app for editing scripts in Windows 10

    Background

    Recently I start to work a lot with JS and I often have to edit files with extensions like .js and .jsx. I am using Sublime Text 3 (Build 3176) to do the editing work.

    Problem

    As I am working with these files more and more frequently, I want to change the default application for opening the two types of file above (and indeed any other related files like .html) to Sublime Text 3. However, I have found that the traditional methods of doing so (i.e. choosing the application preference by Right click -> Open with -> Choose another app -> Choose Sublime Text -> Click "Always use this app to open .js files, as well as going to the Properties and then doing the same, also tried using the Default App setting in Control Panel (default app by file type)) didn't work. The default app was still set to something called "Microsoft (R) Console Based Script Host".

    Other methods attempted

    After reviewing several websites I also tried to modify the Registry. Specifically, I navigated to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.js\OpenWithList". There I saw several entries as following:

    Name "a" -> sublime_text.exe

    Name "b" -> CScript.exe

    Name "MRUList" -> "ba"

    I attempted to delete an entry containing something called CScript.exe, and remained an entry of name "a" -> data "sublime_text.exe", and "MRUList" -> "a". However, when I switched to another entry (for example the entry for .html) and go back to that one (.js entry) again, the setting was automatically reverted to the one as above. I also tried to change the value for "MRUList" to "ab" and it was still like this.

    I am quite frustrated by this because it seems Windows 10 really like to stick to that thing called "Microsoft (R) Console Based Script Host" (which I believe to be the "CScript.exe" thing in the registry) and it is very annoying when a CMD window just flashes when I want to open my script for editing. It seems Windows 10 is ignoring my settings and keep reverting what I was trying to change. What should I do (and try) to either force Windows to dismantle the CScript.exe thing, or force Windows to keep my default application preference?

    Other observations

    I also attempted to set Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 as the default app for editing .js files using the traditional methods as stated above. All didn't work.

    Specifications of System

    The tests were performed on two computers:

    Both Windows 10 Home x64 version 1803, build number 17134.407

  2. Cannot change the default apps by using control panel

    Original Title: Cannot change default apps.

    As said, I cannot change the default apps by using control panel > ... > Default Apps tab.

    I cannot change any of the default programs. I use paint.net to edit/view photos and I cannot set it to the default program even though it is on the list, it does not change and i'm stuck with the default photo viewer. This happens with any other app actually,
    I cannot change the default music player there, nor browser or anything.

    I followed these steps as suggest by a microsoft engineer, post 2, and later on, no avail.

    Can't change default apps in Windows 10

    I refuse to use work arounds, I'd like a proper solution is possible, thank you.

    Windows 10 forgets default apps

    I have noticed like not 5mins ago that Winamp just got kicked out of my default apps list in Windows 10 Pro.
    I installed this installation not max 3 weeks ago with fresh downloaded Windows 10 Pro using Microsoft Media Creation Tool, is there a way to fix this bcs I using sfc /scannow don't do a lot for me and I have run it before on this installation.

    Before u ask, I have fully updated my Windows 10 with all non-insider/beta updates.

    The only thing I have disabled is the uac prompt that popup when u need admin for applications to run bcs it's simply annoying.

    I don't remember having all these problems with Windows 8.1 Pro when i was using that and I am really thinking about going back so I can have "fully control" over Windows again with like disabling all the admin crap bcs I feel like it's messing more up and makes things less useful in Windows 10 with all these small problems I have and I read a lot of ppl having problems with various things time and time again where they needed to reinstall Win10 over and over to get it to work fully.

    Any advice on how I can get Windows 10 to just work as a "daily driver" without all these small annoying things? *Frown Unable to change default app for editing scripts in Windows 10 :(

    Windows 10 1803 default app change bug

    When right clicking a file and going to "Open With", no matter what file it is, I can't change its default. The box is checked, and the app doesn't change.

    This is also true of right clicking and going to "Properties". When I click change, the default doesn't change.

    This is happening to me on 3 computers now. Steps to reproduce? I could probably do it by:

    Installing Windows 8.1, and upgrading to 10 with the media creation tool.

    This does not happen with a fresh install from a USB with Windows 10.

    Don't tell me to go to "Settings" and change the defaults. The file type list is horrible, and some of my file types are not listed. The registry is not an option on multiple PCs as it is not just one file type. It is ALL file types. No matter what one I
    try, it's always the same result.

    Are there any suggestions? I know how to navigate computer, so please do not suggest that I need to go to Settings

    > Apps > Default Apps. These options are far from optimized, and they don't have what I need. There isn't even an option to browse for an app to select defaults for when the app doesn't show up in the list.

    A quick fix would be nice. Even a simple item in the registry? I could potentially have this problem on all 75 computers in this building as they all started at 8.1 before going to 10. I can't reinstall Windows on every machine. That's ridiculous.
