Windows 10: Unable to connect to internet when antivirus needs to be updated

Sometimes when I turn my laptop on, it will be disconnect from the wifi and when I go to the bottom right and click on the network icon no options besides airplane mode show up. The way I’ve found to fix this is to connect my computer through ethernet and update the windows defender antivirus. For some reason there is always an update that is needed when this happens. Does anyone know what may cause this or how to prevent it? I’ve tried checking for updates daily and that works for a while but eventually it disconnects and I have to fix it again. Thank you.

He does have options,

1 Buy an AntiVirus at a store(does not need online updating or activation)

2 Have a friend download Malwarebytes to a USB drive and install it on his computer

3 Take his PC to a repair store or even Best Buy's Geek Squad

4 Find an internet connection and repeat step 2

5 Give up on the computer and buy a new one

...should I go on?

Seriously though, how hard would it be to download Malwarebytes to a flash drive and give him a copy? Or just do some research for him and see what virus he has and try to delete the virus yourself.

a friend of mine has some kind of conficker worm/trojan on his pc , but he does not have any antivirus
he also has no connection to the internet ,note he simply doesnt have internet anyway , so its not a case of the virus preventing it , so he cant use any online scanners ,and most antivirus programs would probably need to update before they can be used ?

any ideas on how to get rid of this ,any help would be appreciated

  Do you have a wired net connection or a WiFi net connection?
  

You can plug in the Ethernet cable directly to the computer and check if you are able to connect to Internet. There might be situations that you might have to install the pending updates and also to update the network driver.

You may try these steps and check the status:

• 
  Run the Network Troubleshooter and restart the computer to check if this helps.
  
• 
  You may try a different network adapter/connection type if possible.
  
• 
  Further you may also check for Windows Updates with a wired net connection and check for updated drivers for the network adapter.
