Windows 10: Unable to connect to public WiFi on tablet

I recently purchased an RCA Cambrio tablet running Windows 10. I have no problem whatsoever connecting to the internet using my home WiFi but am not able to do so on a public unsecured network. I wind up getting an authentication error. I have gone into settings to allow the tablet to connect automatically to that network when in range and it does show up in my list of known networks; however, whenever I attempt to connect, it won't. I have tried the network troubleshooter and ultimately it wants me to sign in to Microsoft -- to do what, I don't know, because obviously I can't access the webpage without an internet connection. For the record, I am able to connect to this same WiFi network via my phone iPhone 8 w/ no issues. TIA for any help!

Windows 10 not connecting to public wifi

Hi Craig,

Let me verify some information to help us sort out this issue regarding connecting to a public. Allow me to ask the following:

• Were you able to connect to your company's public wifi before?
• Can your tablet connect to a different public wifi?
• Is Airplane mode disabled on your tablet?

Before looking into the other settings, please make sure that the Airplane mode is turned off on your tablet, then try to reconnect. If you're able to connect to your company's wifi before, then I suggest that you forget the network from your tablet first
before you reconnect to it. Just navigate to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks > select the company's wifi, then hit
Forget. Once done, reconnect to the network and see if it works. If not, reboot or restart your tablet and try again.

Please update this thread with the result so we can further check on it if the issue persists.

Can't connect to certain public WiFi.

• Which Windows version is currently running on your phone?
• Are you able to connect your phone to other public WiFi hotspot?

Why does local wifi get set to PUBLIC?

Win10x64HOME on household wifi along with tablets, phones, her PC, Internet Radios, occassional guests ...

Ensuring wifi network connection on this PC is set as PRIVATE. After a few days this PC loses some connections. PUBLIC / PRIVATE wifi found to be PUBLIC. Setting back to PRIVATE re-allows all connections. The cycle repeats.

What could be doing this? AVAST Internet Security is running.

All other devices are connecting OK as PRIVATE wifi.
