Windows 10: Unable to download the "Get Windows 10 App" update

The key that's showing is a generic key to install Win10. Download ShowKeyPlus from @Superfly here in the forums to see if what you OEM or Original key was/is.




Before posting a window shot of it click on the key numbers to hide all but the last four characters.

One question though, you did upgrade first, correct? Otherwise if you directly clean installed without upgrading, you're not going to be able to activate without a Win 10 key. For the free upgrade you must do it either through windows update or download the ISO through the media creation tool, and mount it in file explorer then click setup.exe.

 

Uh, oh... no, I've only installed an OS once before and I thought I had to boot from the USB itself; I didn't know I was just supposed to run a .exe from inside the iso file. Does this mean I have to try to roll back to Win 7 and start over? For some reason, ShowKeyPlus said my product key from the sticker on my box was invalid and that my OEM key was "not present in the firmware." Is there a way to fix that? I saved a backup of my Win7 system on an external hard drive.

 

You need to reimage 7 then run setup.exe from the win10 ISO.

 

Do you happen to have a link for a guide to that handy? Want to make sure I don't mess it up. Would it be possible to just use a backup I have saved from when the PC was still in Windows 7?

 

When you say "Backup" do you mean a "System Image"? Then yes.

I think I have both, actually. So, the system image will work, but not the backup--good to know. Then then I'd just upgrade to Windows 10 from the same USB drive, but instead of booting from it, click the setup.exe in it. But I was actually wondering if the system image or backup could work to provide me the "original" product key or whatever I need to activate my versions of Windows, just so that I can upgrade and do the clean install of Windows 10 without having to reimage back to Win 7 again. I noted the ShowKey program had a "Recover from backup" type option, but I wasn't sure if that would work for this situation.

 

From the Win7 to Win10 thru setup.exe will work(that's how I did my laptop for "RTM") you don't have to enter a key during the upgrade process or after, it should be automatic, or the very least, in Activation in the settings app. It might take a few tries, depending how busy their servers are, just be patient and keep trying.

Well, I did as you suggested and posted on the thread, but then dug a little deeper and found that the ShowKeyPlus coder was last active six days ago. :/ I don't know if I have that sort of patience. I guess I'll probably just try it myself when I get home and then if it doesn't work, I'll go through booting on the system image disc and then trying to upgrade while still in Windows 7. Ha, wish me luck.

@Zibeltor, sorry I missed your post that was directed at me... did you manage to retrieve your key from your backup? Not many have reported on that functionality, just wondering.

 

@Superfly No worries; I'm sure you're a busy guy on the forum and it was a pretty minor issue in the scheme of things anyway. I'm afraid I was not able to get the key from the backup, but that might be due to user error more than anything. If I recall correctly, I didn't even know what file type I was looking to open when the windows explorer dialogue box popped up and the folder hierarchy inside the backup was so confusing I just decided it would be easier to use my system image disc and start over. Ha, sorry I couldn't be of more help.
