Windows 10: Unable to get Win10 to recognize EPSON 4870 Photo Scanner

I have thus far been able to get my 4870 scanner working. I have tried the EPSON recommended drivers for Win10 and several versions of Vuescan. The drivers seem to install OK but as soon as the install completes an error message appears stating that there is no scanner attached. If anyone has had a similar problem and gotten it resolved I'd sure like to know how you did it...

Windows 10 changed printer and scanner function

On loading Windows 10 for printing items other than from word docs I get a black window with far less options than previously. Likewise I lost my scanner icon and on sorting it's return I now get a page with again far less options for scanning.

Scanner Epson Perfection 4870 Photo; Printer Epson Stylus Photo 1500W.

I also notice that I have had a clean up app deleted in total.

Have you checked the drivers for your printer?

You can also try to uninstall the driver from the Device Manager and install it back from the Epson website.

To determine plug and play device detection, you need start in Device Manager
> Do you see Device Manager refresh as you plug/unplug the scanner from the port? (Of course, scanner should also be turned on)
> When plugged in the device should appear under Imaging Devices or an Other Device category. Do you see a device appear in either when the usb cord is plugged into the port?

 

Yes...when the scanner is plugged in the OTHER DEVICES icon appears and underneath that is an EPSON SCANNER icon with a yellow exclamation point.

 

Check if your Windows Image Acquisition service is set to Automatic start

 

It was set to manual. I changed it to auto and restarted but still get the error message?

 

Good news is Windows detects the hardware.

Bad news is when Windows goes searching on its own, it doesn't find what it thinks is a compatible driver. (That's why it appears in Device Manager as an "Other Device")

Hopefully good news. I found this old thread How to Install Old Epson Perfection 1200 Scanner in Windows 10. Good news is the driver file Epson gives for your 4870 is the same the one for the 1200. So try those same instructions (you can skip download/install part as you've already installed the file)

 

Good luck with my old Perfection 1200 fix. My 1999 scanner which is 'unsupported' according the Epson still works fine in Windows 10!

 

Well, I religiously followed the instructions - several times - and the drivers never installed. I then tried several variations on the theme but still no joy.

There must be something basic wrong but I haven't been able to figure it out.

I got my ASUS D2X sound card installed without a hiccup but I may have met my Waterloo with the 4870.

I do appreciate the help...

 

Does the driver file epson12180.exe run OK and does the unzipped setup.exe file run and install the driver? You could try running the installer as an administrator and in Windows 7 compatibility mode since it's quite old. Also check you are plugging the scanner directly into the PC and not via a hub. Check connecting too via different USB ports in case you have a hardware issue.

 

I believe by default Epson unzips into folder C:\Epson. Won't hurt to unzip into that folder again.

Use DevMgr to Update Driver again->"Browse my Computer". This time Browse to the C:\Epson folder. Make sure "include Subfolders" is checked. Click next. Any better luck?

 

It actually appears to run OK...files are un zipped, install starts, get list of scanners to choose from,am told the driver is installed, seems to work like you would think it ought to but when I click on EPSON Scan icon am told EPSON scan cannot start and device manager still says no drivers installed?

 

I had a similar problem with my old Epson Perfection 1200 scanner. I'm currently on holiday and away from my desktop PC, so I can't access all of the details. As I remember I had to describe my scanner in Device Manager as an imaging device and select Epson 2400 instead of 1200. Then specify the driver as epson12180.exe - this has worked for me, though, of course, Windows 10 now refers to the scanner as an Epson 2400.

 

in the Device Manager, Right click the Yellow Flag and choose Update Driver. Choose Browse My computer. Let Me Pick from a list. If it shows more then one driver, like the 2400 choose that one, if not, click Have Disk and browse it to the downloaded folder to the .inf file to install the driver.
All else fails, contact HP Support.
