  1. Unable to login to boot command prompt

    Hi,

I have just used the SHIFT-Restart option to activate the Windows 10 Troubleshooting and tried to open a command prompt. It asked for a password. I entered my password but was told it was incorrect.

I booted normally using the PIN I normally use, and went through Settings | Accounts | Sign-in options | Change to change my password. In the 'Old password' box I used the same password that had just failed to get me into the boot command prompt and it allowed me to change the password. It said I had successfully changed my password.

If I use SHIFT-Restart again, I still cannot get into the command prompt using the new password.

Am I dealing with two separate passwords here? If so, how do I change the one associated with the boot command prompt?

Note that when trying to boot to the command prompt, the displayed use name appears to be correct - i.e. it is the same one listed when I use my PIN to boot normally.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Kind wishes ~ Patrick

    :)

Command prompt boot, which disk to select

    Ciao,

I'm Ugo, a Microsoft Independent Advisor willing to help other Microsoft customers.

Regarding your question, the screenshot you shared usually pops up when there is a typo in the command, so it shows exact switches for that specific command.

    Please be sure you typed:

    list disk

    exactly as above.

Please let me know if this helped somehow.

    Ciao

Unable to login to boot command prompt

The PIN method is not accepted or used when trying to boot into safe mode, command prompt or the other options for an advanced start. It will only accept the password you use on an admin account. Perhaps you have set up an admin account with a different password?

  5. I have now solved this. I had changed the password on my account, but I had never used the new password to login. I had instead always used the PIN. So the rule is: if you are using a new account or have changed the password, you must login to the machine using the password, not the PIN, at least once before you try to use the password from the boot menu.

    Thank you for your help.
