Windows 10: Unable to reactivate win10 on Lenovo after mombo replacement

I followed the instructions here and I should have been able to activate


My device is named "LENOVOS20" and it shows up under "my devices" as win 10 pro with digital license ending in 3V66T. The on-board ethernet quit working and I added an old PCI ethernet. However, that interfered with the second PCIe slot that I now need so I got a replacement motherboard. Before replacing I made a copy of the bios and uploaded that into the replacement.


The original S20 was win7 pro and its activation key ended in 24367. I used that free upgrade to get to win10.


Using the trouble shooter and that "changed hardware on this device recently" but that didn't not work: "try again later" -or- "try adding microsoft account again".


I then logged out logged back into my Microsoft account. Same problem: "Window is not activated" Is that what they mean by "try adding Microsoft account again?


I then tried my win 7 pro key but that didn't work either at that "Change product key".


I can put the old motherboard back in as it is still working and I assume still activated. What can I do differently so the new one is activated?

Reactivation Failed

I have just recently replaced my motherboard/processor and I reformatted my windows hard drive. I gone through the hardware changes steps, I chose the old machine listed on my account and clicked on ACTIVATE.

It now tells me that:

"Unable to activate Windows

We can't reactivate Windows on this device. Try again later."

What am I missing here?

Here's the tl;dr version:

-3930k died, replaced with 5820k and new board

-reactivated windows with no issue

-ddr4 was too expensive to upgrade from 8gb so sold that and went back to my old 4790k

-now when I try to reactivate windows, i'm given a box that reads "unable to activate windows. Make sure you're connected to the internet".

I'm always given this error even though i'm obviously on the internet. any one have a fix?
