Windows 10: unable to switch out of S mode om this version of Microsoft Store. Windows Home. Device is...

Hello,
I am unable to install/update 3rd party apps to to Microsoft Store / Updates issues.


Background information:

1. PC details:

- Windows 10 Home

- HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC

- OS version: 10.0.17134.0

2. OS 1803 - upgrades have failed to 1909 and 20H2 for over one year raised in separate thread, but potentially related

3. Trying to install new apps e.g. Atom editor or upgrade existing apps e.g. CCleaner this pops up




clicking on "See how" reveals:



unable to switch out of S mode on this version of Microsoft Store.

... device is NOT running in S mode

4. However, I cannot upgrade Windows 10 to 1909 or now to 20H2 - so I appear stuck.

5. I reinstalled Microsoft store using command below, which seemed to succeed i.e. no error message:

Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$$_.InstallLocation\AppXManifest.xml"}

6. Folder C:\Users\xyz\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState IS ACCESSIBLE
Any suggestions greatly welcomed.

Conclusion: Seems like I am stuck / dependent upon upgrade succeeding before I can solve Microsoft Store probelm and achieves app updates / installs

Switch Out of S Mode Not Working in Microsoft Store

I finally was able to fix this "Switch Out of S" issue. It is not obvious so I wanted to share.

First, the issue is with the Microsoft Store, not the device. Here are the steps...

• Open the Microsoft Store app
• Click on the "..." at the upper right of the screen
• Choose "Downloads and Updates"
• Scroll down to the Microsoft Store app and click to update

The update downloaded to my new Surface Go.

Then on your device...

• Go to your device's Windows Settings
• Select "Update & Security"
• Select "Activation"
• Select "Switch Out of S" and go to Microsoft Store
• Once there you will be able to make the switch

Talk about painful...

2. Could you please provide the screenshot of the page where you are not able see Get button by referring to
   
   How to include a screenshot in your post?

Fix problems switching Windows modes in Microsoft Store and try performing troubleshooting steps mentioned in the article and check if it resolves the issue.

Unable to Switch out of S mode

We understand the issue you are facing in switching out of S mode, we will look into this for you. However, we will need the following information from you:

• When you say, “I have installed a fresh version of windows 10 on my pc and was put into windows S mode because of not having a windows key at the time” is Windows 10 activated on the computer currently?
  
• Do you get any error message/code?
  
• Which build version of Windows 10 is installed on the computer? To check type:
  winver in the search bar on the Taskbar and hit
  Enter.
  
• What is the make and model of the computer?
  
• Did Windows 10 S come pre-installed on the computer?
  

In the meantime, I suggest you to refer the steps mentioned below and check if that helps:



Method 1: Reset Microsoft Store



You can try resetting Microsoft Store and check if that helps. Type
wsreset in the search bar on the Taskbar and hit
Enter. A command prompt window will open and reset Store. Once done open Microsoft Store and try switching out of S mode.



Method 2: Sign out and Sign in



You can also try signing out and signing in back to the store and then try switching out of S mode. Follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Open Microsoft Store, click on the
   profile icon and select Sign out.
   
2. Now, click on the profile icon again and select
   sign in.
   
3. Follow the on-screen instructions and sign in with the account.
   

Method 3: New user account



If Method 1 and 2 doesn’t help, create a new user account, sign in to store with the Microsoft account and try switching out of S mode. Refer the article

Create a local user or administrator account in Windows 10 to create a new user account.
