Windows 10: Unable to upgrade to Windows 10, v1511, Build 10586

Hi,
I haveupgrade Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit (English US) to Windows 10 Pro, 64bit also English(US) when I received the Microsoft notification in my HP ENVY 17 laptop, onJuly 29th according to my memory.
The upgradingprocess was without difficulties, like a charm; the laptop continued to worksatisfactorily and I am happy with Windows 10
Since thattime a number of updates were automatically downloaded and installed forWindows, Windows Defender (a lot), Office and two Cumulative Updates: KB3105213and KB3116869.
The laptophas i7, RAM 16GB, HDD 1TB with 750GB of free space.
However inNovember v1511, Build 10586 was not automatically downloaded and obviously notinstalled. So, my current version still is 10.0 Build 10240.
Therefore,I tried to install 10586 manually with an ISO file saved on a DVD and downloadedvia the Media Creation Tool and Tech Bench.
Aftermounting the ISO I tried to install 10586 opening its exe file as Administratorbut installation always stuck at 25%. Similarly with the program downloaded to anUSB and opened via Advanced startup or directly from the USB itself.
As anexternal device I only have an USB Microsoft mouse. I also tried to use the laptoptrackpad instead the mouse but results were the same.
At 25%always appear the same phrase: “Something happened Windows 10 installation has failed”.
Ialso tried to deactivate both Windows Firewall and Windows Defender, but sameresult.
Both sfc /scannowand dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth commands were and are OK.
I willappreciate your advice and instructions in order to finally install 10586.

Which Windows 10 version you're on? FYI, Spotlight is available on V1511/Build 10586 or later.

Questions about build in Windows 10

The only bit I can comment on is v1511. That is the latest significant build v1511 build 10586. With all current updates it will show as v1511 10586.122.

Just as another comment you don't need to install Windows 8.1 then upgrade to Windows 10. With digital entitlement from your first upgrade you can just use Windows 10 install media to complete a clean install. When asked for a key use the option to Skip,
Do this later or I do not have a key. As long as you have upgraded from Windows 8.1 pro previously you will b able to clean install Windows 10 Pro.

 

What anti-virus are you using? Try uninstalling it. You can reinstall after the upgrade.
Same if you are using a firewall other than the built-in Windows firewall.

 

I'm using Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall both provided by Microsoft in Windows 10.
I performed one of my tests trying to install the upgrade with Windows Defender deactivated but also without results, installation stucks at 25% similarly to the other tests.
25% seems to be a magical figure in my laptop...

You don't need to disable Windows Defender or Firewall.

Have you moved any of your personal folders to another drive or partition?

My apologies for unintentionally disturbing you with my W10 1511 installation problem.
As I'm not a computer specialist I really need help and advice, like yours
Regarding your point, I didn't move personal folders to another drive or partition.
Concerning your colleague Mr. De Costa' post, regrettably none of its items solved such problem, even with the USB pendrive formatted as FAT32 by means of Rufus.
Besides I ran the W10 utility Windows UpdateDiagnosis.diagcab as Administrator; both results were OK (and Windows Update works well, as I see Windows Defender updates continue to be downloaded and installed).

Do you have any data you are not willing to lose backed up? If not, do so before you do anything else.

Open a Elevated Command Prompt (Windows key + X, select Command Prompt (Admin)).
Run the following:

SFC /scannow

If there are any non-repaired problems, run it again. If necessary run it a 3rd time.

If still problems, run the following commands:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If DISM reports it can't find the source files to repair with, follow the direction by KYHI here:
SFC SCANNOW and DISM RESTOREHEALTH - Repair Corrupt Files

Download and install CCleaner from the following link: CCleaner - Standard

During installation, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar.

Start CCleaner. Click on Tools (ICON) and Select the following BUTTONS to create two (2) text files:

• Uninstall > Save to text file (install) – bottom right corner of app window
• Startup > Save to text file (startup)

Locate and open each saved file in the ‘Documents’ FOLDER:

• Copy and paste the contents of each file into your next post (2 files).

Also, would like to see what you hard drive partition structure looks like:

Post a snapshot of a fullscreen Disk Management Window:
To open Disk Management, press Windows key+r, type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter or click GO. Make it full screen. Expand the fields as necessary so everything can be seen.

Press the Print Screen key then open Paint (Press Windows key, type paint then click on Paint at the top) and paste the image from the clipboard into Paint.
Save the paint image to your hard drive (File / Save as).

How to Take a Screenshot in Windows 10

 

There should be an error file setuperr.log in the temporary windows installation directory. Is there an error message towards the end of that file which indicates what the problem is?

If the command bcdedit /export <insert your filename> fails then you probaby have a corrupted ESP partition which may be fixed as shown in the above link.

I will be pleased to receive your further and complementary suggestions for solving my problem.
As you are aware my HP laptop only have installed KB 3105213 and 3116869, so upgrade version 1511 and subsequent updates are missing and i can neither install them manually by myself nor by means of Windows Update.

Do you have additional ideas on how to solve this problem? I thought that W10 was the cream of the cream OS, however...
By the moment I only can use Windows Update for updates to Windows Defender.
