    Uncluttering my taskbar

When I start to use a program like Phrase Express, its icon appears in both parts of my taskbar [the left-hand portion and the notification area]. I don't need it in both places--and to remove it from the left-hand portion I have to close the program, which I want to remain open. How can I keep it open without cluttering my taskbar with the two identical icons? Or does the one on the left serve some useful purpose?

    :)
