Windows 10: Unidentified network - No Internet access

I have two computers running Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview Build 9926. One computer is a desktop and it is working perfectly. The other is a new HP 15-F039WM laptop and it came with Windows 8.1 With Bing installed and it also works perfectly in Windows 8.1 mode. I resized the hard drive on the HP laptop to free up 150Gb of space and then installed Windows 10 TP Build 9926 from DVD. It still works perfectly when I use dual boot to go into Windows 8.1. When I use dual boot to go into Windows 10, the network icon in the system tray says "Unidentified network - No Internet access". I did swap cables, etc, but I knew that wouldn't work because the laptop does have Internet access when booting to Windows 8.1.

I read through some threads here after searching for DHCP and connectivity issues and even tried some of the suggestions such as using regedit to look at the network profile. There isn't a network profile. It is displaying a 169... IP Address, so I know that it isn't getting an IP. I tried to manually add the correct settings that work for Windows 8.1 (192.168.0.15 with 192.168.0.1 as the Gateway), but that fails.

Any ideas?

1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the computer?

1b. Where or from whom did you purchase the computer?

1c. Was the computer sold to you as a brand-new, never-been-used-by-anyone-else computer or as a used (refurbished) computer?

2. Did the computer come with Win10 preinstalled, did you do a clean install of Win10, or did you upgrade a Win7 computer or a Win8.1 computer [<=PICK ONE!] to Win10?

3. Who manufactured the computer (e.g., Dell; HP; Acer; Lenovo; ASUS)?

4. When (approx. date) did the problem start (e.g., as soon as you got the computer home from the shop; after installing KB4048953 on or shortly after 14 November 2017)?

5. What installation media did the shop use to get Win10 installed on the new SSD?

6a. What, if any, third-party anti-virus application or security suite (i.e., not Windows Defender) might be installed?

6b. What, if any, third-party anti-malware application(s) (i.e., not Windows Defender) might be installed?

6c. Is Trusteer Rapport installed? [If you don't know what it is, chances are it's not installed.]

7. Has a Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?

8. Have you ever run the Norton Removal Tool and/or the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool?

9. Are you in the habit of using "registry cleaners" (e.g., Avast Cleanup AKA CCleaner's registry cleaner component; Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Total System Care; Advanced System Optimizer; Comodo System

Unidentified Network, no internet access

I have tried using a USB add-on device, but when installing the drivers, I get a Bsod saying Driver_page_fault_beyond_end_of_allocation saying that rtwlanu.sys. I can still connect to my wifi without the driver, but it no internet access. Any advice?

 

Try running this batch file to reset the TCP/IP and Winsock stacks.

TCPIPreset.bat

IF that doesn't help, try the static address again, but include the following Google public domain name servers
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

The subnet mask should auto fill with 255.255.255.0

Are your sure the subnet for your router is 192.168.0.1

Check the connection status from the Win8.x side to be sure.

IP addr: 192.168.0.27
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gtw: 192.168.0.1

Pref DNS: 8.8.8.8
Alt DNS: 8.8.4.4

If all else fails, power down the router, cable modem (if separate) and PC.
Power up the PC
Power up the router, wait 15 seconds
Power up the cable modem (if separate), wait for it to do it's handshaking with the server and ........

Bill: I will definitely try your batch file. As for 192.168.0.x, yes, that is correct. I always set my routers to "0" and not "1".

 

Did you check the ipV4 settings?

Unidentified network

 

Here is an update: When build 10074 came out, I formatted the Windows 10 partition and reinstalled from scratch using a verified (by SHA1) ISO burned to DVD and it is still failing with the exact same problem. The good news is that there are many people with my problem, so I will assume that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

 

You probably need to download windows update to get the wireless controller driver. Connect your computer temporarily to the internet via ethernet cable.

 

Hmmm, I seemed to have left out one bit of information in post# 2
Try using the values in that post in the alternate configuration.

I scoured the internet for hours, resetting wins, tcp, setting a static ip address, etc.

I uninstalled Avast and rebooted, which did the trick.

 

Glad you got it sorted and thank you for posting the resolution. It seems as though there are a few AV products that interfere with Win10 in the preview.

Don't run naked though, setup Defender as your real-time AV protection until MS or Avast figures out why these things happen.

 

Avast did that to me too on W8 and on first TP iteration, thought they fixed it by now.

None of this has worked for me. I've tried everything. Does anyone else have a clue?
