Unity Mode Fix for W10 VMware VM's on Linux Hosts

    Hi there

This seems to work fine for Windows 10 VM's on some Linux Hosts.

    1) Uninstall VMware tools on the VM - shut down but don't re-power on
    2) uninstall open-vm-tools on your HOST machine - typically as root or sudo yum autoremove open-vm-tools or whatever it is in your distro.
    3) reboot the host
    4) power on the W10 VM
    5) install VMware tools
    6) re-start the W10 again

Solved -- now Unity is working !!!

Here's mine running W10 on Centos 7 Host - Menu shown and EXCEL 2010 on the CENTOS desktop. Menu auto hides - just mouse point top left hand corner of screen. Brilliant way of running Windows VM's -- I think the whole Unity mode has been vastly underplayed - especially when you have several monitors !!!!.

    Cheers

How to display different virtual desktops on different monitors

I would suggest the most useful get-around is to run VMware virtual machine and use the power of a wider desktop to run the VMware (or HyperV etc) on the 2nd monitor. You can then run the VMware software in 'unity mode' which allows you to work directly
in the application window (the one inside the VM); this is better than having to Alt + Tab to the VM environment guest and select the app window you want inside that. It's great, and Windows / VMware is a good solution. (I don't know HyperV which I believe
has similar functionality). Just make sure you have plenty of memory, as a 64 bit VMware guest VM OS will use similar RAM as a your 'host' machine.

port win 10 on local vm

    - Bought a refurbished machine with win 10 + digital entitlement (most probably after win 8 upgrade)

    - Created a vm via vmware as "image" of the physical system

    - The vm win10 guest seemed to have no activation problems on win10 host

Problems come when launching the vm on linux host (same physical machine): the win10 guest is not able to activate. Besides this causes a bunch of key/mouse etc.. driver unsolvable problems.

All this was pretty easy with pid oem licences (e.g. w7). How can that be solved, if it could?

    Thanks for reading
