Windows 10: Unsafe at any circunstance?

They say Win10 is unsafe in any condition. Also, no matter what I set over my privacy, it will always spy me and send my personal data to somewhere in this planet.

I'm lost. I don't know what is true, what is not.

Thank Micael. A good example of the problem arose when I googled for a software program that had been mentioned in Mod Requests & which someone there had said was a dodgy product. It turns out to be a dodgy product but the website itself must be safe because
I didn't see any red circles.

At a time when hacking dangers are perhaps more prevalent than ever before it's strange that all the useful help we received has gone. (I wonder whether Norton still use that system - any users here with Norton?)

I'm not sure that I'll be allowed to explain PIA properly - it almost means a pain in the "bottom" and is not found in the list of acronyms used in computing!

 

Honestly, why do you care? One way or the other? Do you really think there is someone reading your emails individually and judging your grammar and spelling?

You probably give up more privacy information on facebook or twitter than could possibly be extracted from Windows.

I've had a few people come to me with the same concerns as you, and so I put together a reply which I send to everyone who asks. It covers the privacy settings in Windows 10, and provides you with some knowledge as to what people are so worried about, and why they shouldn't be so worried, really. I post it here for you:

Now that you have upgraded to Windows 10, (or are thinking about taking the plunge), here is some information regarding the privacy settings in Windows 10.

There is also another feature which W10 has for "sharing" downloads like Windows Updates. It's similar to peer-to-peer sharing, although it's a bit different.

You can download Windows Updates, for example, on one machine on your LAN, and that download will then be shared with other computers on your LAN, so they don't have to be downloaded all over again for multiple computers. That makes perfect sense. It also has a feature to "torrent" downloads for apps and Windows Updates from other computers on the internet, which can be easily turned off. This also works for "uploads". If someone has bandwidth data caps with their internet service, this could be a problem, so it's easily turned off.

If you use the BitLocker encryption feature on your hard drive, you should be aware that, when turning on BitLocker, MS will generate your recovery key, and back that up to your OneDrive.


Now, if you do any P2P torrenting, and have lots of illegal stuff going on in your computer, you might want to not do that on a Windows 10 machine. (Okay, you shouldn’t be doing that at all anyway!) A lot of the big torrent sites are looking to ban or have already banned W10 users...

As far as advertising and FBI/NSA snooping comments go - we've already had that problem with Google, but where is the outrage? Your telephone calls have been turned over by Verizon (and all the major cell providers) on a regular basis. Where's the outrage?

You have to remember, everything that MS are trying to do, Google have been doing for years, so it's not like we have a major catastrophe here with Windows 10. Use Google Calendar? Google save all of that data and comb through it with their bots. Same with Google Mail. Use Google Now on your phone or tablet? Same as Cortana. All this info that Google have been grabbing for years is all for advertising - that's how they give you all these apps for free. Your cell phone has a unique advertising ID that you CANNOT turn off. At least MS give you the option to turn it off.

The key here is, be aware of what you do mind and don't mind sharing, and take advantage of the options MS give you. Google do NOT give you these options. Neither do the cell phone companies or Facebook.

Here's an online advertising setting for MS which you can turn off, if you don't want "personalized" ads in your browser.

Want Cortana to truly be your personal assistant? Put your contacts in the MS People app, use the MS Mail app, and the MS Calendar app, turn location on (especially when you're traveling and will need it), and you can do email, get reminders, local searches, open apps - everything through the voice-controlled Cortana (Hey Cortana…open Skype for Desktop app). In the new Edge browser, you can highlight words and then right-click to select ‘Ask Cortana’. You can even highlight, draw and type on web pages and then ‘share’ them easily. Everything can be synced with your phone. The more you turn off, the less these features work. Turn on syncing and any W10 device you log into with your MS account will be like your home desktop - everything will be synced, even the theme - everything will be ready and waiting for you. Things don't "default" to OneDrive - you have to specify it. But, it sure comes in handy when you don't have your computer with you and you need a file, or a phone number, or access to your other data. (Or, you haven’t been keeping up on your backups, and your hard drive suddenly dies, taking all your data with it.) Basic Word and Excel apps are now free on Google Play Store for your Android phone, and also free in the W10 Store for your computer.

People are going off the nut on this privacy issue with Windows 10, but where is the outrage over Google's massive snooping? and Facebook? and the cell companies turning over all their data to the government on a regular basis?


The only real shocker I see here is in the future - with the WaaS Model (Windows as a Service) - there will be "features" coming in the future (about 2-3 years) that will require "payment" to include in your W10 OS. Don't want them? Don't buy them! It's similar to "in-app purchases" in your android apps.


So, don't let people scare you. Investigate for yourself, and make informed decisions on your personal settings. It's that simple.

I use to pay things thru internet. Untill now no harm has come to me. The manager of my Bank account told me not to do that, but thru their machines only. Well: can one guarantee that Bank do not steal our data??

 

Jaca, think about this: because you exist, there is information stored on all kinds of servers all over the place about you: from doctors to hospitals to dentists to credit card companies to banks to telephone companies to insurance companies to merchants and restaurants - even people who have never owned a computer in their entire life, are getting letters in the mail telling them their information has been hacked/stolen.

Think about this: your bank has records on you about the bills you pay (and therefore who you are buying services from), and if you have a credit or debit card with them they have a record of everything you buy with it. They have your name, address, ID information....and what if their servers get hacked? *Wink

 

No, I didn't. I just said, why do you care if it is? I don't know what, if any, or how.. I just don't care, and I don't understand why anyone thinks their porn surfing habits are a) of interest to anyone, or b) what damage it would cause to you if someone actually was.

 

I had no intention of creating so much controversy! But I think it's good. Trying to put an end to this debate, I ask: such concerns did not appear to Win7, right? Thus, there is "something else" with win10. I think it might be better to go back to win7 until this situation is clarified...

 

You can choose to share your information with Microsoft or you can chose not to, it's up to you. Yes there's lots of information out there about each one of us, doesn't mean you have to share it with anyone else unless you want to. I choose not to but that's just me but I don't sync anything, don't send emails to my cell phone (heck I rarely even use email), never had a Twitter or Facebook account and have never once bought anything that was directly advertised to me ( I always opt out). Your priorities may be different than mine, don't worry about it, do what you choose to do.
