It is very good advice to make an image first before upgrading - if there is something on the drive that you don't want to take the chance of losing.

Also good advice to make sure you have written down the product keys for the previous operating systems.

Well he/she is not you. Just because you had issues, does not mean OP will.

A nicer response is 'I had issues, and whilst personally I would stay away from it, I advise you make an image backup, try it for yourself, and then if unhappy, you can revert back'

At my age I do not really care to be corrected by some kid. And who says that I am a nice guy.

Just the opposite. The students that I teach who are in their early twenties think that I am one of them.

Well that's a good thing!! I also will admit that Windows 7 Ultimate which I ran for years, on 2 of my computers, was rock solid. I still have 1 Windows 7 Ultimate DVD with a key I've never used. Bought it in 2012 just for a backup, plus, I bought it for a great price too. Still have one older computer, not online, that still has Windows 7 Ultimate installed. I've never liked Windows 8 or 8.1 that's was just junk to me. Then I started playing with Windows 10 Pro, it's still got some bugs that drives me nuts, I'll admit it, but its getting better.....slowly.... and I like the challenge of trying to figure out some of its problems. It will be a pretty good OS at some point in the future. Plus all the Great members we have here on Windows 10 is a big plus plus for me. So many real good people here makes one feel right at home....kind of thing... Anyhow...I'm way off the subject here....so I'm out *Smile

I put a 250SSD into my Win7 desktop one month before the Win10 came down the pipe. The win7 operating system and programs were cloned to the Samsung 250. The only issue was dealing with the 500gb size of the original hd ...shrinking or trimming the clone down to the 250.
( I have other harddrives for data storage. I don't keep data in the User acct/MyDocs etc) The system and program files is under 50mg.
Win 10 was upgraded to this SSD.
Although I had fast 7200 harddrives there is no comparison to the SSD performance.
Win10 recognized this hardware structure as the system.
This cannot be done AFTER the Win10 install. Win10 will recognize a hardware change.

Just a little hint - next time use imaging rather than cloning. Then you can move a larger partition to a smaller SSD (provided the data fits and you leave some room for over-provisioning). When you restore the image, the size will be adjusted.

I hired the services of a trained technician for this task. I assumed he cloned. I asked if he had any issues and he said the words about the size difference. Afterwards I concluded perhaps he hadn't done that specific task on a regular basis since I had mentioned the factor of 'trim' when I handed the machine in. I provided him with the software that would do the task. It all worked out well in the end.
I'll remember your advice for or if there is a future 'event' *Smile

That would be incorrect. Windows 10 will only de-activate itself if the motherboard is changed. I myself (and thousands of others) have personally cloned a HDD upgraded to an SSD with Windows 10 and it cloned and remained activated just fine.
