    Hello,

    tl;dr

Update KB4556799 is broken for some systems and the update needs to be fixed so it does not continue to cause future problems when Windows Update re-installs it.

    Long description:

The update KB4556799 was installed on my laptop ASUS ROG G750J, i7-4700HQ, GFX-860M as part of the normal Windows Update. After the updates my laptop became very unstable and would blue-screen within a few minutes of restarting or turning the computer on.

The reason for the blue-screen was always slightly different, so initially I suspected it was possibly some memory going bad or the CPU or GPU overheating it is an older laptop after all.

The computer had been working fine up until the updates, and unfortunately I did not suspect the updates at first and spent the better part of 4 hours running memory and stress tests on my computer. The symptoms remained and I started researching the last set up updates, and I found KB4556799 was known to cause system instability.

I uninstalled KB4556799 and rebooted, and spent the next 18 hours enjoying my computer without any problems. I did wonder though, what would happen when Windows Update ran again and saw that KB4556799 was not installed. Well, I did not have to wait long, my question was answered the next day today when I restarted my computer and noticed Windows was running some updates. After the computer restarted I pulled up the Update History, and there it was, KB4556799 had been installed again.

While I uninstalled KB4556799 for a second time, I researched how I might stop Windows Update from trying to install it again. Having a repeating install/uninstall competition with Windows Update is, sorry, not my idea of a "good time" or time well spent using a computer.

I did find a tool that could be downloaded from Microsoft why is this a stand-alone tool I do not know that allows you to disable or "hide" an update. KB4556799 was in the list of updates available to be hidden, so I hid the update and restarted the computer.

Now my question is, how long will KB4556799 *stay hidden*, and what are the updates it contains that might be beneficial if they had just been designed properly? At this point, only time will tell, as I really don't expect an honest answer from Microsoft, especially one that does not start with the typical "textbook" apology spare us, please, insincere apologies are worse than insults, and then a bunch of generic links to suggestions that, yes, I have already tried.

I hope this helps someone having the same problem, and I really hope someone at Microsoft actually does care and is able to correct this problem.

    Matthew

Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/defer-upgrades-in-windows-10

I hear this only applies to Pro and Enterprise editions. But I can't verify that.
