Windows 10: Update KB4579311 fails with error 0x80070003

I am trying to install the update KB4579311 2020-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 version 2004 for 64-bit systems, but it keeps failing with error 0x80070003. The update is downloaded without problems, it is then installed and asks for restarting the computer. After the computer is restarted, installation of the update reaches 7% and then the computer restarts and Windows reverts this update as unsuccessful. The error code is the only information I have, I need more to know what might be preventing this update from installing.


I used Windows Update troubleshooter; it did not find any problem.


I found WUreset.bat containing commands to reset Windows updates, used it, but the problem is the same.


I used DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and sfc /scannow; this did not find any problem and everything should be OK.

I downloaded the problematic update as a separate package and ran its installation; the problem is the same.


I have a fresh install of Windows 10 on HP ProBook 4540s, with latest versions of drivers downloaded from HP, with few programs installed XnView, VLC, Skype, Avast antivirus, MS Teams, and I really do not want to reinstall Windows.

Is there any way to find out why installation of the update crashes at some point. Is there any detailed log file or can one be generated? I start to be desperate about this desperate situation.

I suggest you to follow the steps given in the link below and check if it helps you. Select Windows 8.1 from the Product list.

Yes. While Services is open, kindly look for Windows update and make sure its running. If it doesn't work, Kindly continue on the next suggested solution

1. **Reset Windows Update in Windows 10
