Windows 10: Update/Lost folders and files

Hello all, I have an unfortunate situation that has come up. I tend to leave my windows 10 laptop turned on most of the time and occasionally will come back to it and see it has restarted. Typically this means there was an update during the night (have them set for something like 3 am). Well, I have never had any issues with this...however, this evening I wake the computer, log in after an apparent update, and have missing folders/files.

The unfortunate part (well, any loss of files is not good) is that so far I know for sure of 3 folders missing. Containing gigs and gigs of photographs from my cameras and videos from my gopro, along with my entire folder of edited/exported lightroom photos. I have scoured the computer searching. I have looked in folders thinking I may have accidentally dragged them away somehow. I have searched for specific photo file names (I can see everything missing in lightroom because they're catalogued, so I know specific files missing).

What has happened? There are other folders and files within the same parent folder these were in that are still there and safe. I have a external backup; unfortunately I had not synced it for a while.
