Windows 10: Update to my HP Notebook Firmware - EFI Boot loader

Good day all -
Can anybody explain the below in user friendly English exactly what I am to do?

I am trying to download an update to my HP15 notebook and receiving an error message -

Windows is using an EFI boot loader, we cant deploy the update. Refer to ReadMe file for instructions to update the firmware locally.

Here is the ReadMe instructions:

HOW TO USE: 1. Download the file by clicking the Download or Obtain Software button and saving the file to a folder on your hard drive (make a note of the folder where the downloaded file is saved).To run the utility locally under Windows (for legacy BIOS systems only): 1. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
To deploy the utility to an enterprise (for legacy BIOS systems only): 1. Open a command prompt and execute the downloaded file with the '-e' switch (for example: SP72533 -e) to extract the contents of the softpaq.2. Go to the directory where the files are saved. The default directory location is C:\SWSetup\SP72533. 3. Use the HitachiHD2FWUpdate.exe utility in combination with the '-s' (unattended) and '-r' (reboot) switches to deploy the HGST hard drive firmware update.

To get option 1 to work can I change anything in the startup.

or the second option, what is an enterprise and explain the -e, -s, or -r switches, what are they.

Please help I am completely and utterly confused.

Bios normaly worked. Bootable usb flash running winPE system. Notebook working After change hdd and installing window7. I thing trouble in boot efi or bcd. After post my trouble i was finded in microsoft support this
problem occurs if the loader does not correctly work this memory

 

UEFI boot problem

Hi, i'm running windows 10 when i try to use EasyBCD it is showing your using EFI boot loader but i set my bootloader to UEFI.

Is there any way to change EFI to UEFI

 

Please display your computer make and model and operating system version and build.
For version and build use left lower corner search and type winver.
Do you have your files saved and a bootable windows 10 iso?
Do you want to be in bios legacy or are you unable to switch to bios UEFI hybrid with CSM or bios UEFI native without CSM?
Are you using HP softpaq download manager or HP support assistant or the HP web site for your download?
The e switch can be -e or /e it means extract
The s switch can be -s or /s it means shutdown
The r switch can be -r or /r it means reboot

I am not a computer wizard but I will try and answer what I can.

HP15 f199nr originally win 8 - have USB backup

Window 10 version 1703 (OS Build 15063.250)

The file is saved on my C:\Documents folder

Do not understand this question, can I just change something in the bios to get it to work?

tried both with the assistant and without.

still confused about the switches.

Checked my BIOS on startup -
CD-ROM Boot - enabled
Internal Network adapter boot - disabled
Network Protocol - IPv4 + IPv6 (UEFI)
Legacy Support - disabled
Secure Boot - enabled

Legacy Support shows disabled which boots in UEFI mode without CSM to support newer OS. Should I change this to enabled?

 

In the left lower corner search type shutdown -r or shutdown -s. The first command will shutdown and reboot your computer. The second command will turn off your computer. These are switches and are part of the shutdown command.
I think what HP has for the download is zipped to make the download faster. To extract it you will use -e

Switching the bios from Legacy to UEFI adds more layers of security and has a faster boot. HP has reported unexpected problems when end users have upgraded from windows 7 or 8 in bios Legacy. They recommend that end users switch to UEFI hybrid before the upgrade. There can be problems switching the bios from Legacy to UEFI or UEFI to Legacy after the upgrade. If you were in UEFI hybrid with CSM you could go back and forth from windows 10 to windows 7 or 8 without problems. So if you want the higher level of security that BIOS UEFI offers you may need to perform a clean install.

This is the HP media library. If it is working you can place your computer product or computer number into the search and view the bios simulator.

I did do a clean install yesterday and tried to update the firmware with the same error message. Is there a place I can check to see if this firmware update is installed. I looked under Device Manager and it is showing a Microsoft Windows driver date 6/21/2006 driver version 10.0.15063.0 Digital Signer: Microsoft

 

The driver that you posted is only for bios legacy.
HP support can give you the best help if you are under warranty.
I use hp notebooks and will try to help. They are s or mobile workstations. So I am familiar with the ways in which to download the drivers, applications, firmware etc.
Are you able to download the HP softpaq download manager? It is substantially better than the HP support assistant.
See if you can install: sp71484

Press the function + escape keys simultaneously to view your product number.
Enter you product number on HP Software and Driver Downloads for HP Printers, Laptops, Desktops and More | HP® Customer Support

Then choose your operating system and view all of the drivers applicable for your computer's configuration and operating system.

If you are able to install the performance advisor you can view all of the information in the bios without having to go into the bios. If you can view the bios on the simulator then you can discuss it to where others can see what you are seeing. If you cannot install the HP performance advisor then reboot clicking the F10 key. Then go into the bios and click on the advanced tab. In the advance tab scroll to Boot Mode. There you need to see whether you have Legacy, UEFI Hybrid (with CSM) or UEFI Native (without CSM) checked.
Then exit and don't save changes.

On the link it provides instructions for Bios Legacy only.

However you already have used this driver as it is the same driver for windows 8.1

It is confusing as HP does not have in the release note how to download without a USB flash drive when in bios UEFI.

If you have a free USB flash drive then there are instructions for the download.

The most important step at this time is to view your bios and see what you had used before the installation of the operating system. If you were in Legacy you would use the steps for Bios Legacy. If you were in Bios UEFI then it appears that you need to use a flash drive for the download/installation.

In your earlier post you indicated that you are in bios UEFI.

These are the instructions for the driver in the release notes:

To update the firmware using a USB flash drive (for legacy BIOS and UEFI systems):

1. Open a command prompt and execute the downloaded file with the '-e' switch (for example: SP72533 -e) to extract the contents of the file.

2. Go to the directory where the extracted files from are saved. The default directory location is C:\SWSetup\SP72533.

3. Create a bootable USB flash drive from the HGSTUpdate_HpMpc.ima image file using an image-to-USB tool (for example: PassMark ImageUSB).

4. Boot the newly created USB flash drive in a system with a HGST hard drive you wish to update.


To boot to the USB click the F9 key repetitively. Then choose the USB as the boot device.

Performance Advisor does not support my work station

I do not have a spare USB flash drive, will have to go out and buy one.

I also have the Legacy Support - disabled

 

If you want to see which HP softpaqs are installed: for example any driver that they offer begins with sp or softpaq.

Open file explorer
Click on local disk or C:
Click on SWSETUP
This is an incomplete list of the softpaqs if you used a DVD to install them.
It is a complete list if you used HP support assistant, HP softpaq download manager, or the HP web site to download.
