  1. Update wiped out writing

So... today, Microsoft decided I really, really, REALLY needed to have the new g-whiz update. I woke up to an "restart now or restart tonight?" message. Given that I was in the middle of writing and needed to have my computer open and working today to deal with an unrelated AT&T issue, I tapped "tonight."

Nothing popped up to let me know a time or schedule anything.

About 4 pm, without any warning whatsoever, MS took over and updated for me. I wasn't using the computer at the time, but I was watching it while dealing with AT&T. It simply went black, then started to update.

I am a fiction writer, and I was working on my first new, original words since 2017. I had saved it to my desktop when I started it a week or so ago. I saved it about every 10-20 minutes without fail. I know that autosave and autorecovery would help if things went wrong, so I didn't fret too much.

Stupid of me to think that. When I finally went back to my computer, there was no autorecovered document. Assuming I had saved it, I went to find it on the Desktop. It was not there. It still is not.

I did a quick search for the title. It... did not exist. It was gone. I went to open up a new Word document, and LO AND BEHOLD, it popped up as a recent document. So I opened it.

The last four days' worth of writing... gone. Just gone. Probably 65-75 different saves apparently never happened, because my document of many pages was now back to 11 pages, and nothing that I had written in days was there.

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! I checked the location of the now-destroyed document, hoping that I could rebuild what MS had wiped out... only to find that it is (according to "recent documents") on my Desktop.

It's not. It's not there. If I search for it in any way, it doesn't exist. However, it is available on "recent documents." So I tried to save it to a new location... nope. It continues to be invisible, unable to search, and not on my Desktop, even though "recent documents" has it there. I'm still brokenhearted and furious about the loss of original work (again, my first in two years), but the insult added to injury of not being able to find or move the document tells me quite a lot about the quality of this update...

And all the time, the new MS update is shouting, "LOOK HOW WE'RE MAKING THIS EASIER FOR WINDOWS USERS!"

Yeah... no. You basically destroyed me.

Anyone know how to deal with any of this?

    :)

How To Format A Write Protected Flash Memory ?

    ¿You already tried this one?...

    Run CMD

    1. diskpart
    2. list disk

Then in the 3º step, put the correct number of disk in the list for the usb flash (if it's listed in disk 3, then you'll have to write select disk 3).

    2. select disk #
    3. clean
    4. create partition primary
    5. select partition 1
    6. active
    7. format fs=fat32
    8. assign
    9. exit

with that commands you will format the flash drive in fat32, if you have a large drive you can select also "format fs=ntfs" in step 7.

    good luck!

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Thanks for the suggestions and for the time to respond Update wiped out writing :) Best regards.

And thanks for the tip of that program, I'll have it on my list.

    Wipe and install Win 7

    Confusing.
I assume you mean "not happy" instead of "beyond happy".

At the very least you'll need:
    1. A legitimate W7 install disk and Product Key
    2. KB976932 Service Pack 1
    3. Driver install files
    4. KB3020369 Prerequisite for KB3125574
    5. KB3125574 W7 SP1 Update Rollup (Windows will be updated to April 2016)

    Then follow this tutorial:
    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ndows-7-a.html

Once you have successfully installed W7, the updates listed above and the drivers, install a program like Macrium Reflect and create at least 2 Backup System Images (on different external HDDs).
    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...e-macrium.html

Once you have created the Backup System Images, you can risk downloading the remaining updates for W7.
I only install the Security-Only updates (and some fixes for them):

    Note:
You'll also need to apply IE and .NET updates separately.
