Windows 10: Updated privacy settings will rollout today on Xbox consoles

We know that technology plays an important role in your life â from how you learn, work, connect with friends and family and game. Itâs vital to have access to technology that enriches our lives, but it is also crucial to understand how technology uses your personal data.

Last year, Microsoft made a commitment to increase transparency and control around customer data and today, weâre taking another step to reflect those principles by updating the privacy settings for our consoles. Offering our users choice has always been a priority, and we have built on our existing controls to provide you with more choice over your diagnostic data:

On your console, you will receive an overview of the required diagnostic data we collect on Xbox and how we use it to make the experience better for you and all of our players.

We will offer you the choice to share additional, optional diagnostic data to help us further improve your console experience, if you decide itâs right for you.

Hereâs what data we collect

To be more transparent with our player community, we will surface more about what data we collect â right on your console. Soon, when you sign into your Xbox One console, you will receive an overview about the required diagnostic data we collect. This update will also be available on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S when they launch on November 10.

So, what is required diagnostic data for Xbox? In short, itâs for keeping your console safe, secure, up to date, and performing as expected.

Examples of required diagnostic data include:

Details of errors that might hamper the consoleâs ability to run games and apps

Details of console setup success and failure to diagnose issues that would keep you from using the console

Details of software update success and failure, as well as other console errors

We know your experience on Xbox is important and this required diagnostic data gives us the information we need so you can game with minimal interruptions.

Ultimately, this data helps us to:

Keep both your console and your games and apps up to date

Maintain your consoleâs safety and security

Troubleshoot and fix problems

As another step towards transparency and optimizing for your privacy, we no longer collect data from voice search and speech-to-text conversion. We continually assess what data we need to support positive player experiences on Xbox, and we have determined that this information is not what we need to accomplish that mission.

Itâs your choice to opt in and share optional diagnostic data

We need required diagnostic data to keep your Xbox running smoothly. However, to expand your privacy and control, we are now giving you the choice to provide optional diagnostic data, beyond the required diagnostic data covered in the above section.

This optional diagnostic data gives us additional info about your console, including enhanced error reporting, so we can learn more about any problems that come up. This data helps us improve experiences and console performance, troubleshoot and fix problems, and make better recommendations for games and apps you might enjoy on Xbox.

Examples of optional diagnostic data include:

Actions you take while using your console

Enhanced error reporting (detailed diagnostic data for conditions causing errors and crashes)

Console performance data

In the coming weeks, when you sign into your console, you will get to choose whether you want to share optional diagnostic data from your console to help us make your Xbox experience better.

Youâll always have the option to change your preference for sharing optional diagnostic dataâboth for your Xbox profile and the console itself (when no oneâs signed in). Parents and caregivers can even update these settings for their kids.

To change your own optional diagnostic data sharing settings:

From the Home screen, press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide. Then go to Settings > Online safety & family > Privacy & online safety > Data collection.

To change a family memberâs optional diagnostic data sharing, as the organizer of a Microsoft family group:

Go to Online safety & family > Family settings > Manage family members. Select a family member, then select Privacy & online safety > Data collection.

To change the consoleâs optional diagnostic data sharing for times when no one is signed in:

Go to Settings > System > Console info > Allow optional data collection.

Xbox Console Streaming (Preview) Starts Today for Xbox Insiders

Test out our newest Xbox One console feature

Today, we at Team Xbox are excited to talk about Xbox Console Streaming, our new system feature that lets you play your Xbox One games from your console on a mobile device.

If you’re an Xbox Insider in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead rings in the US and UK, you can now try a preview of Xbox Console Streaming. You’ll be able to play your owned and installed Xbox One games, including Xbox Game Pass titles, on an Android phone or tablet remotely from your home console.

Our vision at Xbox is to empower you to play Xbox games where you want, when you want. Whether you’ve got just a few minutes to complete a race in Forza, or find yourself with an hour to get some online multiplayer in before the next train arrives, console streaming allows you to play your games on the go.

We set out on this vision for game streaming earlier this month by beginning the public preview of Project xCloud, allowing you to play games directly from the cloud. And now we’re delivering on our second streaming option by kicking off the preview of Console Streaming so you can remotely play your full Xbox One library from your own Xbox.

I’ve been spending a lot of time testing Xbox Console Streaming through our internal employee takehome program, spending lunch breaks playing through Slay the Spire. I love being able to game during these moments so I can always stay in touch with my gaming community and make progress through stories that were traditionally tied to my living room. I’m excited for Insiders to experience this for themselves.

This preview is an important step in our journey to deliver game streaming to Xbox players around the world. We’ll work closely with you and the Insider community to gather feedback that will shape and define future iterations of Xbox Console Streaming.

As we learn more from all of you and continue to improve the experience, we’ll open Xbox Console Streaming to more Insider rings and expand to additional regions. Stay tuned for updates.

Xbox Console Streaming (Preview): What you need to know

Here’s what you need to know and can expect from Xbox Console Streaming (Preview):

You need to be an Xbox Insider in the US and UK with a console enrolled in the Alpha or Alpha-Skip-Ahead rings to participate in the preview.

We will expand the preview to more rings and regions in the future. If you’re interested in joining the Xbox Insider program, you can find more information here.

To participate in the Xbox Console Streaming preview, Insiders need:

A phone or tablet running Android 6.0 or higher, with Bluetooth 4.0.

A Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One Wireless Controller.

While not required, we recommend a controller mount for those gamers testing on a phone.

Download the Xbox Game Streaming (Preview) app from the Google Play Store:

The app will guide you through setting up Xbox Console Streaming on your enrolled Xbox One, including performing a test to ensure your home network, console and controller are ready for Xbox Console Streaming:

The network test ensures your console’s network connection and setup meet the minimum requirements:

NAT type: Open or Moderate

Upstream bandwidth: At least 4.75 Mbps required, 9 Mbps preferred

Network latency: 125 ms or less required, 60 ms or less preferred

Console settings: Power setting must be Instant-on

Connect the console to his Xbox app on Windows

Hey Xbox Gamer!

In order to get your console connected with your Xbox App again, we suggest you try performing a

Factory Reset while keeping your games and apps.

Press the Xbox button to open the guide.

Select Settings.

Select All Settings.

Select System.

Select Console info & updates.

Select Reset console.

Make sure you have your email and password as you will be asked to sign back into your account afterwards. Let us know if this helps!

cant open privacy settings

Hi Sean,

There are several possible explanations as to why you're encountering issues with accessing your Xbox account's privacy settings. Here's a list of the common factors:

There's an ongoing Xbox Live server outage.

You're using a child account which needs a parent permission in order to change the privacy settings.

Access to Xbox Live is not yet available to your location.

For us to determine the root cause of this issue, kindly answer the following questions:

Are you using a child or a parent account?

Have you made any changes to your Xbox account before encountering this issue?

Have you tried using a different web browser to access your account's privacy settings?
