Windows 10: Updates KB4598242 and KB4586876 will not install

The updates KB4598242 and KB4586876 will not install. Please help.

Cumulative update KB4598242-OS Build mismatches-W10 20H2

This is what I've done to date.

1- downloaded the update reset batchfile from the source given, and run it.
2-immediately rebooted the machine
3-downloaded the relevant ssu, although this is listed as installed in Control Panel > Programs. Running that msu confirms that it's already on the system.
4-downloaded the KB4598242 msu from Microsoft, and run it. It started Ok but failed with the same error 0x8007000D
5-checked with sfc /scannow - no problems reported.

In other words, I've stepped through the suggested processes, but still end up with the update failing to install, and with the same error as when update attempted through WU.

I may try the whole process over again, before attempting anything else.

Thank you for your detailed instructions!! This will probably take several days & I'll keep you updated.

I did steps 1 & 2. This installed more updates than I could count...something like 20-30. However, KB4586876 was not listed. Unfortunately, I had to undo several things (I now remember why I didn't update all MS products). I have Word, Excel, & Access from 2003, as well as Word & Access 2016. Updating MS products caused a "file validation" problem whenver I opened a .doc file. I fixed that (with a registry hack). However, it did something to Word 2016, where all my .doc & .docx files were opened by Word 2003 & Word 2016 wasn't an option under "Open with...". I ended up restoring everything from Macrium Reflect.

I will now start with step 3.2.

I agree with Steve's suggestion earlier. Copy all the relevant KB4586876 info from your posts here to KB4586876 Net - TenForums and discuss it there. Otherwise your wisdom will not be found by others who might have problems with this update in the future.

Steve - The most comprehensive list of updates is always that in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features, View installed updates. The others suffer from Windows weeding processes - in Settings, Updates it only shows those updates it is capable of removing.

I installed KB4586876 on three computers in early December and did not find any problems.
