    I have updated my laptop to windows 10 been using it for 2 months now , no updates have been downloaded when I check there are some in the box but it says under them waiting to download one says downloading but nothing is happening . Is there something I am not doing to get the downloads to work. I do have a internet connection would appreciate some help *Huh

    You are running two anti-virus products. These will conflict and damage each other. Please remove Norton or disable Windows Defender.

    Norton Removal tool Uninstall and Reinstall Norton product using the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool

    Please run System File Checker. Select the keyboard shortcut
    Win+X,
    and click Command Prompt (Admin) on the drop down menu. Type
    cd\ and press the ENTER key. Type sfc /scannow and press the
    ENTER key. Please say what is reported when the check completes.

    After the process has finished, you may receive one of the following messages:
    •Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    •Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

    •Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.

    •Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

    Which message was received?

    Select the keyboard shortcut Win+X, and click Command Prompt (Admin)
    on the drop down menu. Type cd\ and press ENTER. Type or copy and paste the command "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
    " without the quotes and press the ENTER key. Type or copy and paste the command "
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" without the quotes and press the
    ENTER key. Make sure you include the spaces where indicated. These procedures can take a long time to complete so you need to be extremely patient. Type
    exit when it completes, press the ENTER key and restart the computer.

    If you get an Error 87 response recheck the command you entered.

    Please upload a copy of the DISM log file as a shared file
    to your OneDrive and post a link here.

    You may need to show hidden files. Use the keyboard shortcut
    Win+X
    to access Control Panel, Folder Options and select View, Advanced Settings. Verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the
    second item. You should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.

    Open Windows Explorer (keyboard shortcut Win+E) and locate your C partition Expand C along the file path C>windows>logs>DISM>dism.log. To expand C click the arrowhead to left of C and repeat with windows and sub-folders as necessary.

    Problem is I have not been getting the regular software updates/patches from Microsoft that automatically update my PC for three weeks.

    I am running Windows 10, Office 2016 and Project 2016 on a Dell laptop with a fast internet connection.


    • If I goto settings>update& security it permanently shows that “updates are available” and downloading updates is “0%”.

      Looking at the “details” of the updates they are mainly for Office 2013 or Project 2014 or Windows 10.

    • Have tried the control panel > administrative tools>services windows update
      this always shows “stopping” as the status.
      The options to start, restart and resume are all greyed out.

      NB its dependency the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is running

    • Have tried unsuccessfully to run from Microsoft 10 page the “Microsoft windows update troubleshooter tool”

      sometimes can’t find a fault, and now says “an error is stopping the troubleshooter from starting” with error code = 0x80070005

    Sometimes it will show you nothing is happening but it actually is, just give it time and wait it out . While its doing that can you surf the web, if so ? Then you know at least you have the internet and from what you mention you do.

    updates not downloading

    Turn it off for a test, refresh. Battery saver eliminates background services, one of which is win updates. Ask me how I know updates not downloading :)

    Do you have the windows firewall on or off?

    Are you using a 3rd party firewall such as Norton Internet Security as the firewall?

    If you are then that was my problem. I turned on the Windows firewall instead and all my updates worked! My store apps had been stuck and I was able to update all 18 of them perfectly as well as the windows update that kept failing.

    Give that a shot!

    I have switched of AVG protection and yes the downloads have started *Dinesh thanks for all your help ( love this site )

    Glad that my fix helped you out as well...I spend days trying to get that one resolved!

    I can tell you that it was deductive reasoning and trial and error because there is not much online about it and yet it clearly affects quite a few people. *Cool
