Windows 10: updating my BIOS to support UEFI , I need to clean install W/10

If you`re gonna get a ssd, then by all means go ahead and do a clean install, I don`t think anyone here would tell you different *Biggrin

 

Just make sure to leave the old HDD disconnected until Windows is installed on the SSD, then connect the old HDD!

An SSD will solve a lot of performance and timeout (not responding) issues. It's the best thing you could ever upgrade in a computer.

I have an SSD on all my computers and I will NEVER revert to a spinner for my boot drive.

 

Ok so I upgraded my nvidia driver.

slicendice: is saying to do nothing atm and just keep it as it is. See how Windows is. Not to update or reinstall or flash anything. BTW I dont think I need to disable SuperFetch as that was 2 days ago

NavyLCDR: says to flash the BIOS and leave it in legacy BIOS booting mode and see what happens. So Windows will be in legacy mode still.

But then some are also saying just clean install Windows with an SSD. What about the BIOS flash, or updating motherboard?
This image shows the latest MB 1.7v files I have on my bootable USB that will be used to "flash" my BIOS. What happens if I just double click it in Windows? Does it update and is safe?

Apparently my MSI motherboard is not compatable with Windows creators update?

We have all told you our opinions on what we think you should do. We are not experts and we give our advice freely and on our own time.

What you do now is up to you and no one else.

Flashing a Bios will not magically make it a UEFI Bios. It either is already or it isn`t. Read your manual.

If you had a perfectly working windows install on a hard drive and you wanted to transfer it to a ssd, then you could just image that install to a ssd, but you don`t, you are having issues.

So with that said, I would do a clean install to a new ssd.


If you are confident in flashing the Bios and think it will serve some purpose then do it. If the MSI forums and MS told you to update it, then do that.

I don`t see any reason why your board won`t work with the CU, all the upgrade does is add some new features.

Windows 10 is an ever changing OS and you have to be ready to deal with that.

Personally I would just install Windows 7, the best Operating System ever created *Biggrin

I did not say that you should not do anything.

I said that you should let the OS settle down for a bit, to see if there really is any problems, or if everything was just caused by the Windows post installation optimization algorithms.

I also said that you should upgrade BIOS, since it should solve many memory and stability issues according to MSI.

Then I told you to also Disable AV for a while, just so that all the optimization completes faster without interruptions. This should be turned back on, once all tasks have settled down. (be careful not to download anything from the internet while AV is sleeping. Windows update is fine though)

The I told you that going for UEFI/GPT will not solve any performance issues you have.

If you still think your computer is slow, then it would be a good idea to upgrade your HDD to an SSD and clean install WIndows. It is the best upgrade you can make and clean installing Windows, often solve a lot of issues. You will also leave your original system intact by removing the old drive while setting up new Windows on the SSD. After that is complete, it's safe to put the HDD back in.

I also told you that if you are having Display issues, sometimes switching to another driver could solve your problem.

I also told you that you may have old driver laying around, that might need updates. But this Windows usually fixes for you once it has completed all it's other tasks.

All the things I have mentioned, you should consider until your problem is solved. You will most likely not be able to get rid of the slow downs that happen right after a Windows upgrade. But an SSD will help it affect the system less. We all have this slow down issue right after an fresh upgrade and the ones with the fastest hardware are affected the least from it.

Ok I think I will either lave my PC for a bit, (maybe even check the Windows update rolling out today).

Then if "personalised settings (not responding)" occurs (hope to god it doesn't) or I might just do this next step even if it doesn't happen, then I will flash my BIOS, then hopefully it should still load Windows as it's set to legacy. Once Windows is fine for a bit, I will install 250GB ssd for OS and some editing softwares, then insert (wipe clean) my Hdd

Thanks for everyone's help and clarification. Sorry that I kept asking and not understanding correctly, when it comes to updating/upgrading VIP parts of a PC I get worried as it can go wrong so need 100% total reassurance and clarification on what to do
