Windows 10: Updating Volume licensed Windows 8 to Win 10

I am not sure if an in place switch from Windows 8 Enterprise to 8.1 Pro is allowed by MS. An enterprise key is licensed to your employer or an organisation not individuals.

To comply with the terms of a retail/OEM license you will probably need to do a fresh install i.e. backup your data, boot from the media (DVD or USB) & reinstall from scratch after formatting your hard disk/boot drive.

And please be aware some of the cheaper Windows 8/10 keys on the 'net are either OEM/System Builder keys OR not genuine. Read the licensing conditions for OEM products carefully. They are not for personal use and meant for system builders who then sell pre-built or custom built systems on to others. MS has plugged a widely used loophole.

PS - Corporates generally install system management software along with other 'special' software packages to retain control on the system configuration and its usage. A clean install gets rid of this unwanted redundant stuff.

 

Interestingly, I had 6.5GB available on my system partition. After upgrading to Windows 8.1 Pro, all my applications are working and now I have 22GB free. Wonder if it cleaned up the potential rogue Enterprise remnants.

 

There was an app call Up Down Helper created by someone for this. Google it. Maybe it helps.

 

I think the program you are referring to is called UpDown8. I have never used it so I cannot really recommend it.

 

Thank you for the program name. I found the registry hack referenced by NavyLCDR to do the trick. It worked flawlessly.
