Windows 10: Updating Windows 1903 on a Dell Inspiron 5100

A couple of days ago I tried to update to Windows 10/1903 on an old Dell Inspiron 5100 that I was going to give to a friend.


As I always do, when I'm going to do one of the major updates, I started it through a factory reset so that when it automatically updated, it would have a fresh restart.


All seemed to go well at first. It got to the Dell flash screen with that little circle thing with the rotating dots.


It then went into the blue Windows "Hi there" page and gave me four settings to adjust: country; app language: keyboard layout; time zone. Then I clicked the "Next" button.


This took me to the next Windows scree: "Why did my PC restart?"


It suggested three things to do: Check that the power was plugged in and turned on; Make sure my WiFi was working and turned on; If it wasn't working connect via ethernet cable.


Did the first two and hit Next.


This took me to another Windows blue screen that said "Just a minute" with more of the rotating dot circle. After about two minutes, it took me back to the Dell flash screen where I'd started.


I've been through this process half-a-dozen time with the WiFi connection and at least another half-dozen connected only by ethernet cable. Same results.


What can I do to either get 1903 installed and working or just get out of the above cycle and back to the previously installed version of MS 10?

Dell Inpiron 5100 and windows 2000

Ok, so my mom has a dell inspiron 5100 notebook, and i recently reformatted it for her and put w2k on it.

About a week later i upgrade the ram from 2x256 to 2x512 everything works great so far

two(2) days ago the desktop COMPLETELY locked up, does absolutely nothing! if you try to click on anything right click, left click, it pings and does nothing.

system spec are

Dell Inspiron 5100
P4 2.8 533fsb
ATI Mobility radeon 7500
1 gb 2 x 512 kingston ddr 266mhz dual channel ram

p.s firefox tried to update and after that it hasn't worked right......i'm going to try that so i'll post back as soon as i know!

 

Windows 10 Home on Dell Inspiron 3847 will not update to 1709


I have two identical boxes with same issue- Windows 10 Home will not update to 1709. Here are the hardware specs & steps taken to fix the problem:

Dell Inspiron 3847
Windows 10 Home ver 1607 OS Build 14393.1944
Intel Core i5-4460 3.2G
12GB RAM
Integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600
1TB SATA HDD

It downloads and attempts to install the latest updates then several hours later reverts back to where it was.
So far:
- installed & ran Windows Update Troubleshooter & taken the steps that it suggests
- renamed Windows 10 upgrade folder and downloaded the latest updates
- deleted the software distribution folder & downloaded/installed again
- ran windows cleanup and deleted all those files
- tried stopping & disabling the windows update service to prevent it from continuing
There is licensed software so a clean install is out of the question.

These PC's are installed in a restaurant and when this happens the whole place shuts down during lunch & dinner. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

 

dell inspiron 546

I have just downloaded Windows 10 to a Dell Inspiron 546 with a Dell 810 All in One printer. The previous OS was Windows 7. I had downloaded Windows 10 because the Windows invitation assured me all was well for the download.

Having made the download I discover I can not print. The printer is listed in settings. It used to be the default device.

Can you advise the steps I should take?
