    Upgrade error 0xC1900101-0x2000C

Thank you, that's what I thought. As I said, that too failed.

I have an idea which I think might work. I have a spare HD in the computer onto which I could do a clean install. I understand that I can now do this using the 8.1 registration key to activate it? If this is so, how do I find the key as I don't have the original disk anymore?

If I do this I can re install my programs one by one.

Do you think this would work?

By the way, I appreciate you sticking with me on this.

    Your welcome,BTW.
Let me get this straight you have another HDD you want to use, but you lost the disc and key for Old OS ? Is this the same Windows that is on this system now,Win 8.1 ? Can activate Win 10 without a key, but Win 7,8 or 8.1 has to be on the system activated first to begin with. Key to the original OS might be able to be retrieved from the BIOS, but you will not need it for windows 10, plus what good is it for future use since you lost the original disc for it. Tutorial here to try to retrieve it https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/7...dows-10-a.html

A Hard drive change i would feel should be done before an upgrade, even though this hardware can be changed after Win 10 activation, would advise Win 10 be installed and activated on it first. Anything wrong with the drive you are using now ?

Hate to make you do a clean install unless you have a way to go back to old OS, in case of similar issues you are having now. Give you info on that, but look over rest again here first.

For one i did mention some of the reasons for these errors :

Incompatibility of hardware or software on the system
ISO that was created is corrupt, Damaged installation source files, need to recreate it
insufficient space on your C drive (system drive), limited space issue for upgrade.
Remove security and system utility software, Anti-Virus, as mentioned

Do you have not much space on the current drive you are wanting to put the upgrade on ?
Did you remove your Anti-Virus software first.
Did you check compatibility of software and hardware on the system, how old are they ?
Did your Get Windows 10 app list any incompatibility ?

I told you to, Check your C: Drive through File explorer double click and open it, do you see a folder called $Windows.~BT ? If this folder is there, another way to make a disc from a file within this folder.

Look at the link in post # 11 again as it seems you did or did not, give you different steps you can try. Unless something incompatible about this PC, i know nothing about the specs. So start from steps #7

The clean hard drive is on the computer running 8.1 that I am trying and failing to upgrade, I did re download a new ISO and have tried using it with no success. I have removed anti virus and security software and there is loads of space on the C: drive. Windows 10 app did not list any incompatibilities. I will check for the $Windows.~BT file tomorrow, the desktop is in another building and not handy.

I followed all the steps in the link you posted up to #18. At that point the progress circle reads 0% and the copying files progress freezes at 3%. Nothing moves thereafter until I restart the computer when it reverts to Windows 8.1 and shows the error message.

I'm thinking that a clean install on the spare HDD will allow me to get Windows 10 onto the computer and then I can sort things out from there. The spare disk is a SATA disk whereas the current OS disk is an SSD. When I have sorted out Windows 10 on the second HDD I could then replace 8.1 on the SSD. The product key I'm referring to is the 8.1 key.

O.k. can be a slight chance there is an issue with SSD and you trying to put it on it, but more unlikely if it was a HDD to have this kind of issue.
You can not use the Get Windows 10 app to install it on the second drive without the previous OS already on it .
Followed steps # 7 through # 18 and this is where you got stuck and believe this is where you always have been getting stuck.
Think you originally used Media Creation tool way, correct or no ? Be on the same link.
Regardless which way you do it may get stuck, since we do not know what is causing this yet, another drive on same system may do the same and to be able to do a clean install and be activated without previous OS. Was tutorial for this, have to check. BTW SSD as you know are much better at performance then a mechanical drive.

Here is that tutorial on doing the upgrade as a clean install without doing the upgrade first and have it activated. Just wonder if this will work and may have to move the other drive to a different port and put that blank drive on original port. Again works if you have an activated Win 7,8, 8.1 system already. Oh, sure all your drives are SATA, HDD and SSD as that is the type of controller port and drive they are.

Just completed a clean install on the HDD and it activated. I simply told the BIOS to boot to the HDD instead of the SSD and installed from an ISO on a USB stick. I'm now slowly installing all my programs. Once I have it set up I will format the SSD and transfer the OS to that drive. So far, all is going well.

I'm pretty sure that something is screwed up on the SSD since the repair facility tells ma that it cannot access the o\s on that drive because the drive is locked. I have no idea what that means but I guess it doesn't matter now.

Many thanks for all your support and advice. Have a great Christmas.*Smile

Can move the HDD to the SATA Port that the SSD was on since it seems you temporarily removed the SSD for now, usually use SATA Port 0,but it does not matter. Why it is locked for them, i am not sure maybe because not running on the system it was originally on if you used encryption, bitlocker or was a problem with the boot record, not too familiar with these locked issues but have come across them on here.

When SSD are bad they mostly just do not work at all, so strange what was causing this SSD your issues, but glad your PC it is working well so far.

SSD are not too expensive anymore and i am not sure how old the one you have is and what brand, but most have up to a few years with there warranties.

TY, Have a good holiday to, you are most welcome, let me know afterwards how it is.
