Upgrade from Win7 to Win10 hangs in SAFE_OS BOOT

    Hi,

I am despairing with trying to upgrade a Fujitsu Amilo Xi 3650 laptop of friends of mine from Windows 7 SP 1 64bit to Windows 10 64 bit, German language. Admitted, the laptop is old hardware but checking the Win 10 prerequisites, nothing obvious should prevent Win10 from running.

Unfortunately, I am stuck in groundhog = SAFE_OS hang day ; with this error
    0xC1900101 - 0x20017
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation

I get this error AFTER I end the install with the power off button the hard way and then reboot. Win7 says it prepares for first use and all is there as it was before the update attempt. Tried once to see if anything changes if I give it more as in 24 hours run time but what I keep seeing is the Windows logo and circling symbol. The installation enters SAFE_OS BOOT and then just hangs there, at least it looks like this in the WindowsUpdate.log.

The laptop always comes back bravely to the old Windows 7 installation when I boot the laptop again.
It says it prepares it for first use and then I am back to checking the log files.

What I tried/checked so far after hours of internet research with trial and error:
    - Fixed a problem with only standard-VGA driver being used by disabling the hybrid driver and pointing to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 9600M beast built in in the BIOS. Checked that there is a Windows 10 driver for it confirmed.
    - Enough disk space on the c partition 145 GB free. Ran checkdisk, all looks good. No disk is encrypted.
    - De-installed all non-MS anti virus software, now only Defender is running.
    - Went through all devices listed in device manager. No warnings displayed, updated all drivers.
    - Unplugged everything that can be unplugged.
    - Deactived WLAN in device manager.
    - BIOS flash did not work one of the old ones that can be done from a floppy disk or CD, CD drive is the first in the boot order but the dear beasty did not from the ISO, likely my fault in the burning with Win7
    - Stopped Windows Update Service and deleted the packages folder, restarted service.

With the Media Creation Tool on C disk and a USB stick created with Media Creation Tool, I tried a fresh install, upgrade with only data/no apps and with data+apps and the last ten times, I installed with keep-nothing option, hoping this should be cleanest. It all made no apparent difference.

setuperr.log is empty. The below are the last trace lines in the WindowsUpdate.log and then the next messages there are traced after I power off and back on again an hour or more later:

Win7 to Win10 upgrade issue msg "First Boot"

i am upgrading from Win7 Home Premium SP1 edition with activated license code to

Win10 Home; initially upgrade failed so i followed the MS directions to create a bootable

DVD with the Win10 ISO file.

After running thru the upgrade screens and on the 1st reboot, the windows screen hangs

with only the cryptic msg about some "First Boot" issue.

How do i get more details on what is the issue?

What can i try to make the Win10 upgrade work?

WIN10 /WIN7 Dual boot, WIN7 forced to upgrade to win10, now I can only boot to Primary WIN10 drive

    I have a WIN10 install on a 256 SSD (DRIVE 2)

and had a win7 install on a 1tb WD Black HD (DRIVE 5)

My primary boot was WIN10 (D2) and always had the option of picking wich drive to boot to on start up.

I was recently forced to upgrade my WIN7 (D5) to WIN 10. It completed the update and I was using the opperating system on my 1 tb HD and it was working fine. Then I shut off the computer and came back about 4 days later and I couldnt boot to my second
win10 install. (there may have been an update to the win10 before I shut it down)

I went into boot up options and selected the 2nd win10(win7) Drive 5 as primary boot and it reverted back to the original win 10(drive 2) boot.

What is the best way to have a dual boot win10 system and how can I change my boot up options so that I can continue to choose the boot up drive?

WIthout a doubt the upgrade Win7 drive is still there and can be used, but there must be a boot settings that is preventing it from being accessed.

If i am not allowed to have a dual boot WIN10/Win10 machine, can I revert back to WIN7 on the upgraded drive?

Also, original WIN10 install was from a win8 upgrade, 2nd one is from a win7 upgrade, both fully registered versions of WINdows.

    Much apprecaited

Upgrade from Win7 to Win10 hangs in SAFE_OS BOOT

Dual Boot Upgrade Q: Win7 and Win10 Preview

I currently have a dual boot with Win7 Pro and Win10 Preview. Now, as I understand, to keep both win7 and Win10, I need to purchase a new license for Win10 as the separate partition installation is not eligible for free upgrade program.

So, I'm planning to upgrade my Win7 itself. Does anyone try this? I'm not sure how it is going to work after the upgrade? Am I going to have Win10 (New, Release version) and Win10 Preview?

If thats the case, how can I remove the Win10 preview installation? It doesnt make any sense to have the Preview version if I have the Release version on the other boot

    Thanks in advance..
