Upgrade install from W8.1.1 Pro X64 to W10 TP X64

I installed W10 TP as a VM under Oracle VB on two computers. 32 bit on one and 64 bit on the other. Both work very well and are reasonable quick as a VM.

I decided I wanted to run it direct, so did a Macrium backup of my Acer laptop then did an upgrade using a mounted 64 bit ISO image (no DVD, no flash drive). Worked perfectly. Took about an hour and a half from start to finish which was much longer that I had anticipated but the Acer laptop is no screamer:

    AMD Athlon TF-20 1.6Ghz
    4GB Ram
    250GB 7200RPM SATA

Upgrade went without any problems at all.
Desktop stayed the same except for Windows Gadgets (8GadgetPack) not starting.
    All programs still work.
Even the Quick Launch bar was maintained.
Classic Shell was also running so I killed it then deleted it so I can play with the new Start menu.
It did create a 14.8GB Windows.old which I will delete soon.

The first thing I would like to see is a way to turn off ALL Modern stuff. Having to go through and unpin all the Modern apps in both the left and right side of the Start Menu is a real PITA. I haven't done that yet but will soon.

During the first boot after install I was asked to setup a new account, which I did not want so I clicked Create new account then Use existing account and that was it, I was logged in with my original account.

It feels like W10 runs better (read faster) on my Acer laptop than W8.1.1 did.

Looking forward to updates with new features over the next few months.

    :)

    Windows 10 Clean Install

I was told that a W10 license would probably have to be purchased. I was running W8.1 Pro x64 and performed the auto update to W10 Pro x64 and I ended up having to do a clean install.

Upgrade install from W8.1.1 Pro X64 to W10 TP X64

I did the W10 TP upgrade to a W7 Home Premium image that I restored to a spare SSD that I keep around for this kind of thing. I have been pleasantly surprised by how well all the software I had installed via W7 works in W10 also. After checking devices, it seems that Windows Update found all the drivers I needed. W10 seems to be a bit snappier on opening applications than both W7 and W8.1, although boot times aren't much different. I look forward to the future updates and being a part of developing what I believe will eventually be MS best OS yet.

  5. I did an upgrade of an existing Win8.1 install that I "cloned" to the new disc and then updated. Was surprised that nearly everything carried over without problems -- including the Catalyst drivers. If this is how well the released version handles the same upgrade, I will be impressed.
