Windows 10: Upgrade of Windows 10 (Home) on a Dell XPS15 9560 from version 1809 to 1903 fails

During the update to this version when the progress bar indicates 14% complete I get the following message:

AMD Ryzen or AMD Ryzen Threadripper configured in SATA or NVMe mode

A driver is installed that causes stability problems on Windows. This driver will be disable. Check

with your software/driver provider for an update version that runs on this version of Windows.


When I download and attempt to install a later version of the driver from AMD (Version 9.2.0.105 recommended)

It won't let me install this, which is obvious because there is no AMD processor in the system, but an Intel

Intel (R) Core(TM) i7-7700 HQ CPU @ 2.80 Ghz


Using the device manager I checked for AMD drivers in the system and found three:

Storage controllers:

AMD-RAID Bottom Device

AMD-RAID Controller (Storport)

System Devices:

AMD-RAID Config Device


I removed these devices, but they reappear are a reboot

Removed them again, and retried the installation.

This progresses further but a certain moment the installation stops and rolls back to the current version of the OS.


I checked the BIOS (latest version supplied by DELL) but found no references to any AMD device or driver.


Does anybody know what is blocking the installation and how to progress with the installation ?

Feature updates 1809 & 1903 on Windows 10

I have 2 computers, an older Toshiba & a newer Dell. Both have windows 10. The Toshiba updated from version 1803 to version 1809 some time ago. The Dell still has version 1803 on it. I never received a notification on the Dell to update to version 1809
but now I am getting a notification to update to 1903 on the Dell only. So the question is, do I need to update to 1809 on the Dell before I update to 1903? Why did it skip version 1809?

It seems to me that Windows/Microsoft has gotten very bad on accurately notifying you of successfully installed updates and those that don't install.

Windows 10 update to version 1903 fails with error code 0xc1420121 and 0x8024000b.

PC is a Dell XPS13.

Can anyone help, I have tried to install from version 1809 about 10 times.

yes it is the upgrade from 1809 to 1903 so its the 1903 that fails.

Yes i did try the The Update Assistant, same error.

If I upgrade using the Media Creation Tool will all my installed programs stay

or will I need to reinstall everything again like with a fresh windows install?
