Windows 10: Upgrade to W 10 from W 8 NOT W 8.1

I have a silly problem. I run W 8 on my desktop computer but have never been able to upgrade to W 8.1 as I have never been able to open Windows Store, despite multiple solutions none of which have worked. The only solution of reinstalling W 8 has not appealed! I am happy with W 8 but would like W 10. With the free upgrade running out I am being exhorted to upgrade by Microsoft. Can I simply upgrade from W 8 or does it have to be from W 8.1? I have upgraded my laptop from W 7 but experienced dreadful problems e.g windows activation failing and not being sorted, although touch wood it is ok now. Also Microsoft warn me dire consequences of remaining with W 8, are these valid or is this project fear?!

I have not upgraded to 8.1, still using 8, do I have to upgrade to 8.1 in order to upgrade to 10?

Now that I think of it I did try to update to 8.1 and it did not complete and went back to 8.....so I guess we need to find out how to upgrade to 8.1, so we can update to 10. There has to be an answer why can't go to 8.1 if it is not just an isolated
problem

 

Download iso from here, double click on it, run setup.exe, select to keep all files.

Since you are already having problems that are causing you to not be able to upgrade to Windows 8.1, it is unlikely that an upgrade to Windows 10 will succeed. But you can try. Download the matching ISO file for the Windows 10 language and edition that matches your Windows 8 you have installed installed now. English (International) or English (United Kingdom) are the language that match English (UK) if that is what your Windows 8 is. You probably don't have a Single Language edition or K or KN - but if you do, you have to match that as well. Otherwise it is just Windows 10 you want.

Download ISO from either:

Windows 10

Save the ISO file on your computer. RIght click on it, mount it. You will get a virtual DVD drive that appears with it's own drive letter. Run setup.exe in the virtual drive that appears.

If the upgrade fails, you'll have to do a clean install:

Yeah - good point but no harm in trying the upgrade first as you say - worst case is a bit of time lost - I have found even borked windows 8 installs seem to upgrade ok better than a borked windows 7 install.

If you still have issues with things like the Microsoft store after upgrading to Windows 10, you might want to try creating a new local user account, change the account type to administrator and see if you have problems with a new user account.

 

A sincere thank you for your help. I have followed your advice and so far the upgrade has worked well and I have W10 and the Windows Store. I did exactly as Navy LCDR suggested. My only issue was with my Nvidia Drivers which a Windows Update has solved. I have my fingers crossed as I have had similar success with my Alienware laptop only to find that after a couple of weeks Windows 10 was suddenly no longer activated.
