Windows 10: Upgrade to Windows 10 stuck

I have got the notification to upgrade to windows 10 via the GWX app. It downloaded via Windows Update and started preparing to download. However while preparing to download it got stuck at 23%. I tried cancelling and restarting the download but same results. I restarted my PC and then started it again. It redownloaded the entire package and again started preparing to download. Still the same issue. I even tried disabling my antivirus(AVAST) but to no avail.

I had a similar experience to that which you had. I then downloaded a Win 10 ISO, burned it to a DVD-R, and installed Win 10 with no problems.

 

Okay. Is it necessary to mount or burn the iso to a bootable dvd/usb or can i just extract the files and run the setup from within windows?

 

It's not necessary.

If you were upgrading Windows 8.1, you could mount the .iso directly as a DVD image and run the upgrade from that. 7 lacks that capability, but there are freeware utilities that would allow it to mount an .iso. You could also extract the files from the .iso (open source 7Zip would work for that) and upgrade form that.

Or, you could create a bootable DVD or USB drive. If you just inserted from it (don't boot from it if you wish to perform the upgrade, rather than a clean install) and run setup.exe from the device.

If you want Windows 10 to activate, you must install it as an upgrade over 7 or 8. (I believe that you must also choose to keep all files, settings, and applications.) If 10 has been activated once, you may clean install it on the same hardware and it will activate online.

I successfully upgraded to Windows 10. I just had to wait a little more time and the installation proceeded without any hitches. Also I noticed that Microsoft dunked my old OEM product ID and gave me a new retail ID. My Win7 was activated but not genuine , and now Win10 is genuine *Biggrin . So far no issues with Win10. Almost all my programs from Win7 are compatible. Performance is fast and smooth without a glitch except for slower shut down and boot up time.
