Windows 10: Upgraded W Defender in W10 1709

As a novice I am definitely qualified in PC security. With the installation of W10 1709 I noticed Defender is supposedly very much upgraded. Question, is the upgraded Defender strong enough to use as my primary security software? I previously had McAfee.

Thanks for the quick Reply.

I've tried those Steps repeativly all Week,with no Luck.Since the beginning of August,the "downloading"of the W10 Upgrade was failing every Time,also W/defender definition updates,plus two other W/Apps,witch I don't use.Other updates install just fine. Also
Microsoft recommended that I must remove Nero7,before upgrading to W10.Since I don't use Nero anymore,I just Deleted the Program,and as I'll be stuck with Windows Defender in W10,I removed my AV(Avast) and started to use W/Defender.And by Allas,W10 downloaded
within 10 min. I upgraded to Windows10 with no other Problems.

Did my A/V (Avast)prevented the download of the Upgrade,I don't know,but after switching to W/Defender,the removal of nero,the notification to upgrade showed up 10 min.after doing those Steps.

Windows 10 version 1709 update problems

if I don't upgrade my TravelMate6292 from W10 v.1607 to v.1709, do I miss future updates of Windows Defender definitions?

It works for me. I gave up AVG for Win Defender and saved $$ on yearly license renewal. I also use MalwareBytes (paid version on main PC; free version on Laptop). Many forum members use this combo as well. Some use only Defender.
