Windows 10: Upgrading from Windows 7 + new system HDD

I have an old windows 7 machine I'd like to upgrade to Win10. The existing SSD is chronically out of space (128G), so I bought a new one (512G) to do a fresh install.

I think what I have to do is:

• Use a different PC for the media creation tool, make a boot USB stick

(irritatingly, I can't do this on the main PC because I don't have 8G of space free on C:, and of course Microsoft doesn't accommodate downloading to another disk)

• Install the new hdd
• Boot the usb stick
• Select "new installation" on the new hdd and install win10 accordingly.
• Reinstall all my software and transfer user files to the new drive

Is Windows 10 smart enough to recognize the other boot drive, and give the option on startup? Or do I need to rely on the bios to select where to boot? It would be handy to boot to Win7 sometimes until everything is moved over and reinstalled.

(Mostly it's just my kids' game saves and whatnot.)

Also are there still ways of getting the upgrade for free?

Upgrade to windows 10 on new HDD

Hello community,

I upgraded to Windows 10 for my laptop last year. Unfortunately, the hdd crashed 3 days ago and I had to replace it by a new one. I reinstalled original windows 7 home on that new hdd. I still have the old hdd as secondary storage in a caddy bay. How could
I upgrade to windows 10 now?
