Upgrading Through WU with 2 Drives

    Background
Ok, I know when doing a clean install or 1st time installation to disconnect the 2nd internal drive.

I have been testing Win10 on my laptop that only has one drive, but my desktop has an SSD OS drive and a 2TB spinner for the Libraries , File History and Macrium Reflect images. I have only started using 2 drives(before this I had never done it) at the end of last year and never had to upgrade or reinstall Win 8.1 update.
    Question

When I run the upgrade to Win10, through Windows Update(whenever it comes down to me), Do I/Should I disconnect the 2nd internal(and redirect everything after), or can I just leave it connected, with no ill effects?

Thanks for any recommendations ahead of time*Smile

    :)

    WHERES WINDOWS 10 UPDATE

The upgrade is not available until 29th July 2015.

You will be notified when your upgrade is ready (on the assumption that you have reserved the upgrade), otherwise you will be notified through WU when the upgrade is available.

    Patience.

  3. Windows 10 Fall Update (Version 1511)

Same here though.Got on one machine and not on the other. Both are connected via same network.

If an update is released, it does not mean that you will get it the same day.Wait for a few hours, preferably days

if you wish to upgrade via WU.

FYI, the size of the update through WU and ISO are nearly the same.

    hope it helps.

To play it safe, I would remove the second drive. Why take a chance when it is quite easy to put it back after the upgrade.

I have upgraded two computers, each containing multiple drives with no ill effects. It certainly does not hurt to disconnect the extra drives, however.

I have seen where people have issues if they don't remove the other drives. I never do, and it has always been without any issues. I have done it with W8 on the other drive, it seems it is people with W7 on another drive that have the issues mostly.

Thanks for both of your input too*Smile.
I'm weighing the pros & cons.
I have(and will again before upgrading) created a system image of both disks(even an image of two system images(they were on my backup partition) just before I upgrade, so if something catastrophic happens I'm backed up, but to create the images it takes about 7 hours(because of the 2 included compressed images which I want to keep at least 2 years on this external HDD), so you can imagine how long to reimage. This is why I was asking if anyone has just left both disks connected with no problems.

  9. I have several PC's with dual drives. I have no plans to unplug the second data drive on either.

I've been updating three comps with second data drives with no problems. Why would win 10 bother with a second data drive?

Trust me - just leave it to win 10!!

You say your Libraries are on the 2TB HDD? If so that may be a problem. I believe W10 installer, like W8.1, expects all user files and folders to be on the boot drive under Users.

  12. On a clean installation of Windows 8.1 all I have to do is go back and change the locations again from the defaults to point to my DATA drive. I upgraded My laptop running 8.1 to 10 and didn't have any issues. It retained the new locations on my second drive. Same deal when I upgraded my Windows 7 desktop PC to 10. My user folders were all on a second partition. The custom locations were retained. Shouldn't be an issue. Unplugging the DATA drive might actually cause an issue when those folders can't be found.

That's good news as many people have relocated their user files/folders.

Thanks alpha*Biggrin. All input is welcome in weighing of a decision. Maybe this thread will also help others decide.
I'm recreating my disk images right now to reflect the current status on an old USB 2.0 ext. drive I have. Not for "in case I want to go back to Win8.1", but in case something goes south. I have been testing 10 only on my laptop, not my desktop, and my desktop has a AMD graphics card.

I have seen instances where Windows installed parts on to other drives in the system. This would make it more difficult later on should you want to replace that second drive.

I always unplug them to be safe.
