Wait, 2016 was going to be the real year of Linux!

Line a who??? *Confused*Zip "can't tell you!" Of course never forget the "Dreaded 10 app has struck again!" scenario where people don't look close enough before clicking on things and then wonder who and what 10 some... har har how now found a way onto their systems. daaa... i only clicked one button! and Surprise Surprise 10 is here to stay! At least that is the way the bloggers illustrate things as far as the initial complaints went.

 

Linux has it own issues but can't say much more that that on here though. I still like Linux and use Linux but still will return to windows 7. Windows still has stuff that I use.

 

I was making a joke because we hear it every year from Linux fanatics yet not much changes.
I actually use Linux too. I have a Macbook Pro that I triple boot with OS X, W10, and Linux Mint. Also my Dell laptop and desktops are all dual boot W10/Mint17.

 

In my experience, here and other Windows and Mac forums people are accepting of other people's choice and don't bash Linux. I wish the Linux community would do the same towards Apple and Microsoft. I visit and post on the Linux Mint forum and most members are very hostile towards anything Windows. You'd think Microsoft killed their parents or something.

 

"around here we do not discuss Mickey Mac or Mini MSose! don't you under derail stand?!" *Mad*Zip And then you go onto a Windows place and discuss Linux on VM, Linux live data recovery. Windows on Wine, and you name it as far as using multiple OSs and Windows on Mac machines, etc. and then the Linux crowds turn out to tight knit closed loop types wanting nothing to do with Windows topics.

That's more of a defensive reaction since those sites tend to see smaller audiences and there's a competition going on. People are too easily drawn away from Linux since they may sampling the other OS only on Windows machines if not live media. You run into typically with hard core Linux only type users.

Yet when you look in both communities and not mentioning the Fruit company bunch but with the Windows crowd you still have the die hard each new version and then those who frown on change and may only look shortly at the lastest. And then you have those that simply move on from one to the next comparing notes with those who dual and multiple OSs in general.

Here I am not so diehard while having intentionally skipped over 8 and 8.1 while waiting a few versions for MS to the act together with the dual platform OS after seeing Windows trashed in 8! Others may have missed 8 and gone direct to 8.1. And then you have some real die hards still trying to run XP or Vista who frowned on 7 and 8 and 8.1 and possibly now are being forced to look at 10.

In comparison to the open source crown there you see those die hards who will rave on about one "Flavor of the Month" while others may be running several. Then you have the Open Suse competing with the ubuntu competing with the Debian crowds, etc. Those in all crowds who elect to try running dual boots or multi-OSing are those who see past the barriers. The Windows crowds don't worry since they know the Windows users will be back. The same applies to the Fruit company squad while those Linux die hards worry about losing Linux users to the other guys's OSs!

 

Some people hate PPA which I disagree with. If it is not listed, that want you to do compiling instead of using a PPA if you can't do a backport. There afraid PPAs could get comprised. What is odd about not using a PPA, is that where the source comes from & it still could get comprised. Compiling doesn't always work or you can't find the needed tools for that distro. I hate compiling with a passion, the main reason it hard to find a distro that has the tools already installed for compiling and works on my system. Depending on the software it could take a long time to compile.

 

Well I wasn't exactly referring to Professional Performing Arts when mentioning the various OS communities. As far as how to get thing installed manually and running on Linux I still never got that far into the other OS simply from not having that having that intense of any motivation to switch over to it! The live distros and having seen a few custom installs were simply a way to get familiar with the basics. A friend who used Linux while in the Marine Corps. for 7yrs. came out with "Stick with Windows! I worked with Linux for the 7yrs. I was in the Corp. Believe me you want to stick with Windows!"

When you look at compiling a program structure you have to remember that Linux is still based on the now rather outdated UNIX Platform despite the changes seen on the surface. Updated installers that work closer to how programs install on Windows are often prepackaged with the newer releases where you simply click and watch as they download and install for you.

With Windows on the other hand the same familiar methods for seeing apps go on pretty well manages to stay within certain frameworks while the way MS will see a loser OS in between versions that catch on has been the up and downs for the OS there. Instead of building on things that made 7 a success MS turned around and trashed the OS with 8 and then two versions later with 10 is starting to get the act together! 10 still has a bit more work needed being that the dual platform combo concept still needs to be worked out while the overall view of 10 places it much closer to where 7 was going. How MS is bringing 10 in however? has had many up in arms over it!

 

I did the same thing although I repaired, configured , upgraded and cleaned up some Win 8.0 /8.1 PC's for family and friends ,that was enough to convince me to stay with 7 x64 until this summer after being a Windows 10 Insider since 01/2015.

Now I have 3 Win 10 10586 th2 normally activated PC's and this dual boot 10586th2 /14267 rs1 dual boot PC .

I use 14267 rs1 for the daily driver and use a standard user acct. on the web but business/purchasing etc. above small paypal things here are done here on the 10586th2 side and backed up to external media and or another internal HDD .

I also have one of the other W 10 boxes with a smallish maybe 250 GB Linux Ubuntu HDD ,Linux drive tools are real good for data recovery even on Windows drives and otherwise it does a lot of things well anyway but I prefer W 10 for the daily driver . Never owned a MAC but I've used them occasionally IMO they are probably OK being Nix based and all but the rabid fanboy stuff for any OS platform is silly IMO.

^^^ None of them are perfect neither is my Android Sony 4K TV that hangs anytime or sometimes re boots itself when you switch /exit Android TV apps or less frequently HDMI inputs . My Android smartphone is more stable . The TV will be getting Android Marshmallow 6.0 soon and has improved with 2 or 3 Firmware updates since I bought it in Dec '15 . ☻

Well I can remember well a number of the comments I was hearing while still trying out the 8 Customer Preview build one of them anyways about them not wanting a mobile OS! being the typical response! I couldn't blame them either for that. MS trashed 8 royally and why you now never hear any mention at all from MS about 8 only 7 and 8.1! That was an embarrassment for them on how they went about putting a mess out before the new structure of seeing the dual platform inplemented and put out simply before it had progressed along far enough. But they wanted to avoid the old Lohn Horn type delays seen with Vista that saw XP linger for the extra 3yrs. there.

From a marketing point of view keeping up with seeing a new flavor out on some type of regular schedule can be understood. But for the customer to have to switch to a crap OS from one that works? Goes over like a lead balloonnn......... *Rolleyes

The fun with VMs is interesting as well since I can have one remain on the same build like just seen for the first of two Pro Insider Preview VMs that both saw the upgrade from an earlier build into the 10586 and then TH2 10586 now seeing the latest 14267 go on last week! The other was simply taking too long while I was booted into the 7 side which needs to see a clean install take place some time soon! actually. Things are starting to run a bit buggy on the physical host side there!

Both were activated and one sees the Digital entitlement while the other saw a key used. Initially that was to try the key option following the 10240 and 10565 not seeing that on that one in particular while the other had been the 10576 build while you could still download the Insider Preview releases for those at the Tech Bench page. That has now remained the TH2 itself.

The second machine sees both Home and Pro VM on the 7 Pro side there as well while the Pro VM will now need to be looked at again to see if that by chance is now activated on it's. The Home edition VM saw a key used on that when seeing the 10586 go on first and then upgraded to the TH2 then 14257 and now 14267 builds having missed he 11099 and 14251 buidls entirely since the mini tower was left off for the month of January there. I also suspect that is why it took so long for the 14257 and why one of the Pro VMs on the main didn't see the latest go on right away. for the other Pro and Home VMs however the only delay just seen was the need to see 4 or 5 updates with the first 2 or 3 installed before the 14267 downloaded on each.

That is consistent with the previous build as well as far as the delay. With the Insider 10586 and TH2 however once each of the VMs were fired up individually and simply left running for several hours after the initial check for updates the TH2 was on it's way! That seems to be one of the keys of updates first and then newer build will come in.

 

Governments are usually behind the private community just because of the number of software packages they run. I work for a local government and we just finished upgrading to Windows 7 in October. We have over 250 different software packages and some will only run in 32 bit Windows 7. We also have a software package that need XP still so we have to restrict IP addresses to access that apps server. We have over 300 servers and 5000 employees. We had planned to replace computer every 4 years which started in 2000. But after one (forklift project) and the bad economy forced us to cut back. We have done 2 across the boards PC replacements since then.

 

Well the thing you are referring to there is the local civilian government not the Federal government that does have all the resources available. Perhaps you have been hearing the various reports about the NSA spying on the private sector's emails and texting on smart phones, etc. with the need right there to be at least one step ahead of the game. The FBI and other agencies have always had the need to stay ahead anyways let alone how things have changed over the last 15yrs. for the more obvious reasons. New technologies with officials getting the leap on things before they are out on the open market tends to see them placed in some aspects years ahead.

For local and state on the other hand tax revenues simply are not there when people are out of work! With domestic manufacturing as well as other jobs being outsourced new job creation was emphasized on by the present admin during the last election and why MS in the last several years wanted to shift away from the desktop platform and expand into the hand helds and Surface, Surface Pro lines since the desktop market went into a slump! They had the time to play around and not come out with anythings serious for a few years while experimenting with the dual platform rather then seeing something like the previous Lohn Horn delay to build a new OS.

With 10 however they had to get serious again since the Windows OS is still the main product. With the past hesitance of companies and local, state govs not moving along with Vista and 7 onto 8 having the obvious reluctances between Vista and 8 as many had with ME well before that and Vista not being as backward compatible to XP programs as the 32bit 7 was found to be the upgrades were as slow as beached sea turtles. The XP mode was brought in as another incentive back in 2009 to address part of that.

This time around however MS is making some rather bold moves between the free upgrade offer and imposing the 10 app on every machine to slightly manipulate things as far as giving the usual hold outs a good swift kick to look at 10. Instead of a pie throwing contest you have an update to upgrade toss up!
