    USB Connected Devices not detected

    Laptop: HP Pavilion Notebook - 17-f202na
    Newly installed Windows 10

    Hi

    I purchased this laptop some months ago using Windows 8.1. I had so many problems and hated the OS so much I upgraded to Windows 10. I have found that some devices I plug in via USB work just fine but some do not. It seems that the more sophisticated devices do not work.
    I have a few HDDs from old laptops that I have put into caddies - these work fine connected by USB. However the following do not work at all when connected by USB.
    * Nook Glowlight
    * Samsung Galaxy S3
    * Toshiba Stor.E HDD
    * CBA Digital HDD

    They all light up indicating that they are charging however there is no drive registered in This PC, nothing appears in Devices and Printers, nothing that I can find anywhere that indicates that the PC detects a thing. There are no error messages or notifications. This is true for all the USB ports.
    I've tried a few things over the last few weeks for each device as I've learned that another doesn't connect but I think it might be best to start from scratch and assume nothing about how far I have got (or indeed how techy I am). The Nook concerns me most since I have paid for content on there. I'm finding ways round connecting the Galaxy and there's nothing too pressing right now on the HDDs that I need to access.

    I am extremely grateful for you taking the time to read this and appreciate any forthcoming help

    :)

    N8 not detected while connected via USB

    I experienced the same problem with my N8 and the simple steps explained did get my problem sorted - I am no IT geek or specialist. Should you find it impossible to follow the steps explained, you have bought the wrong phone in the first place. Next time,
    give the phones with the cord attached that plug into the wall socket a try, they are more farmer friendly - stay away from all cell phones, they have more functions than the corded phones and therefore more advanced (like your N8). The problem you are experiencing
    is called technology hick up`s which comes free of charge with any make of cell phone on the market.

    Good luck !!

    Does device manager list any unknown devices or any disabled devices?

    Thank you xeleron

    1. That's really good of you to go to the trouble of finding the specific drivers
    2. I was on that part of the HP site before I posted but did not known that Chipset drivers were relevant (I've now learned that motherboards have North and South bridges too....)
    3. This has WORKED! At first my devices weren't recognised, and then I started plugging in the HDDs. They were recognised. I then swapped the USB leads I had been using and the Galaxy and NOOK were recognised too. I could even connect a Blackberry I don't care about.

    Thank you so much - although it looks like the NOOK and Samsung were (possibly) not recognised for unrelated reasons this has resolved all my issues. I am so grateful *Smile

    I have one query remaining - I have some branded USB leads and some cheap, unbranded USB leads. The unbranded ones are sufficient for charging but not fit for connecting devices to my PC. Do you know why? Could it be the USB version they support, or something more involved than that?

    Many thanks

    Hello,it might be that your chipset may be a little more restrictive with the USB specifications,that is,if a device does not report its capabilities within a certain amount of time it will not be recognised ,or if the usb cable is iffy and there are many data transmission errors.My Lumia phone is particularry strict when it comes to usb cables of unknown quality,it warns me that charging will be very slow(often so slow the phone discharges faster than it charges).Also,with certain USB cables there is the risk of destroying your electronics,my AKG bluetooth headset came with a USB charger that explicitly states that I should NOT connect it to a pc.

    That could be considered a good thing for the principal use case I have for these - overnight charging!
    Eeeeek!

    Thank you - I bought the cheap USB leads simply because they were really short. I might see if I can get short quality ones now.
