USB drive not detected in Windows Explorer when plugged in

    Hello all,

I've got a bit of a weird problem. I am installing a new notebook (HP ProBook 470) for one of my colleagues. He uses a lot of different USB drives for his work.

When I plug in one USB drive, it will not show up in Windows Explorer. So I checked if it will show up in disk management and drive manager. In both it comes up when plugging in. Disk management is assigning the letter D to the drive.
When I open Explorer and navigating to D itself with the navigation bar, I can open the drive normally.

It doesn't matter what USB stick I use, it happens by all of them.
But, when I connect a second USB stick (with the first still connected), this one will show up in the Explorer as the E: drive.

Normally the D drive is used for a CD/DVD player. This laptop doesn't have one, so that should not be the bottleneck.

I would like to know if one of you knows how I can let the D drive show up in Windows Explorer, or how I can set the default drive letter for any USB to for example the E:. Changing the drive letter in disk management for every USB stick is not an option, because my colleague does only know how to turn on and use the notebook the way he uses it.

    Help is very appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dippie

    :)

Toshiba External USB drives not showing in Explorer or Disk Management Plug-in

    Thank you for the update.

Looks like your system is unable to detect your external hard drive. Let's see if scanning for new hardware will fix the issue. Follow these steps:

    • Press the Windows key to launch the Start menu.
    • Type in Device Manager and press Enter.
    • Under Device Manager, select Action tab > Scan for hardware changes.
    • Wait for your system to install the generic driver for your device and follow the on-screen instructions.

If the issue still persists, we suggest that you perform the following recommendations below:

    • Plug in your external USB drives to other USB device port of your system.
    • Use other USB cables for your external device to connect to your system.

Keep us updated and we will be glad to assist you further.

  3. **SOLVED**USB drives not appearing in windows explorer? help please

As my title says, Im not seeing my usb drives in Windows explorer. i plug them in , there is No sound, no "installing device software", nothing. If i open "my computer" , the progress bar SLOWLY fills up with green, and MAYBE the useless "removeable drive" title will appear, with the right letter, but it isnt any good, because if i click it in ANY way, process explorer freezes. I CAN see the drives i plug in, if I go into Device manager\disc drives. I have tried BOTH Usb 3.0, and 2.0 , annd I have had NO luck. They used to work, but I can think of NO reason why now they do Not. Any useful ideas are Gladly welcomed.**edit** If i have the USB drive plugged in , and try to run Disc manager, it doesnt appear, just a blank window, but if i remove all usb drives, and run it again, viola! it works fine.

If i touch any of these removable drives my PC's windows explorer will freeze

USB drive not detected in Windows Explorer when plugged in

My Seagate external hard drive is not detected when plugged in to USB port of my laptop using windows 10?

    Thanks for your response.

I have tried all the steps provided, however in vain. The external hard drive is not identified at all in any of the the USB ports when connected. The USB ports identify other external Flash drives and devices. However this drive is detected in another laptop
using Windows 7 OS. Please advise further.
