USB Keyboard and Mouse not working after PC attempted to fix HDD error

Last night when I shut down my PC I came back to it an hour later to find the fans still running and the lights still on so I pressed the reset button to try shutting it down again, it got a BSOD as soon as it started up again but then it rebooted fine after than and I shut it down at the log in screen
Then this morning when I turned it on I logged it fine and went to make a coffee while it loaded but came back to find that it had frozen and was not working so I reset it
This time it loaded fine and everything was working but it gave me a warning that there was an error with the HDD and needs to restart to fix it so I restarted it, waited for it to fix the problem and then it got to the log in screen but my keyboard and mouse no longer work.
I tried them in different ports and tried a different keyboard but they did not work either (interestingly I tried a USB number pad that did work but obviously only typing numbers doesn't help me log in)
I googled the issue with my windows tablet and found people with similar problems managed to fix it by forcing the PC to go into the recovery menu and then doing a system restore so I tried that
I got into the recovery menu (the keyboard and mouse worked fine in the recovery menu so the USB ports and devices clearly work) and attempted to do a system restore but I only had 2 restore points available and both of them did not complete successfully and gave me this error code (0x800700b7)

Any ideas how to fix this? I'm guessing the issue is with the drivers but also probably something is wrong with the HDD. I see in the recovery menu there is an option to reset the PC and reinstall windows which I assume might help but would I lose any files? I'm going to buy an SSD to replace the HDD so my main goal is to at least be able to access the files on the HDD and back them up but preferably I would like to be able to use my PC while waiting for the replacement SSD

    :)

No keyboard, no mouse, no trackpad.

Basically, my device has been crashing, after the latest crash, my mouse and keyboard both failed, my USB mouse worked, so I attempted windows driver troubleshoot. Restarted after troubleshooting, no mouse driver! All of it works in BIOS and "Windows didn't
load correctly" screen. The Windows not loading screen happens every time it fails to shut down correctly cause of the frequent BSODs.

  3. Keyboard and mouse no longer work at startup after recent Windows 10 upgrade

Windows 10 was recently upgraded and after startup the mouse and keyboard no longer response. However here are some observations.

    1. Mouse and keyboard work on another pc

    2. Mouse and keyboard work in BIOS mode

    3. Mouse and keyboard work in recovery mode.

I have tried different usb ports, they all work for the above 3 scenarios.

Using wired keyboard and mouse and have HP Pavilion desktop.

There appears to be no error as Windows looks like its loading up correctly. I cannot see the mouse on screen and there is not response to any keyboard combinations.

  4. USB Keyboard and Mouse not working after PC attempted to fix HDD error

    Hi...
I'd boot from a repair CD. If you don't have one, go to another Windows 7 PC, click Start -> Control Panel -> Backup and Restore -> Create a system repair disc. Use a 32 or 64 bit system to match the problem PC. Insert a blank CD-R and it'll create it. Then boot from the repair CD on the problem computer.
