Windows 10: USB Mass Storage Issues with Thumb Drives

I'm having issues with a USB drive. I've tried several different thumb drives in every USB port on my desktop. When inserting the drive, Windows makes the noise recognizing it's been inserted.


The drive does not show up in explorer. I went to Device Manager and it/they are showing up under "Other Devices" with the orange triangle and exclamation point to it. Double clicking and trying to "update driver", I get "Windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install them." "USB Mass Storage Device".


When troubleshooting, I saw instructions to delete the various drivers under Universal Serial Bus controllers there are several under there.....but USB Mass Storage Device is NOT listed, and then rebooting. I did try deleting some and the end result was my wireless keyboard stopped working and I had to go back to a restore point from a couple of weeks ago.


In short, I appear to be missing a USB Mass Storage Driver and see no way to re-install one. I have no idea how this would happen, I don't use this computer very often.

USB mass storage not recognizing

Method 1.

I suggest you to run hardware troubleshooter to diagnose the exact issue. It will automatically detect the problem and fix it.

• 
  Press Windows + X keys on the keyboard and select Control Panel.
  
• 
  Type Troubleshooting in the search bar on the Control Panel.
  
• 
  Click on Small icon on the left navigation pane.
  
• 
  Click on Troubleshooting and click on
  Hardware and Device.
  
• 
  Click on Advanced on the Hardware troubleshooter dialog box and click on Run as administrator (Enter the credentials if required).
  
• 
  Click on Next and follow onscreen instruction complete the Hardware troubleshooter.
  

Method 2.

If the issue still persist, I suggest you to uninstall/re-install the mass storage device and check if this helps.

  Press Windows key + R, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.

  Go into Device Manager and expand Universal Serial Bus controller.

  Right click on the device under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers node related to mass storage device and
  uninstall it. .

how to change "USB attached SCSI mass storage device" to "USB mass storage device"

Hi there:

I have a Seagate USB portable drive and I mainly use it to connect to my ASUS Oplay! media player to watch the content on TV.

This device use to be an USB mass storage device.

Recently, I noticed whenever I eject my seagte portable drive, the device is showing as ""USB attached SCSI mass storage device" instead of a regular "USB mass storage device". This is when my media player stopped recognising the portable drive (showing
the device is not supported). The portable drive works fine on my Windows 10 PC, just not recognising by my media player anymore.

Wondering if anyone can point out how I can restore my portable hard drive back to a generic USB mass storage device instead of being a "USB attached SCSI mass storage device".
