Windows 10: USB ports stop working after Win 10 1909 update

I have a friend with a fairly old Packard Bell oneTwo M3700 all-in-one machine which had been running Win 10 Home 64 bit 1809 quite happily for many months. Without warning in its wisdom the machine decided to install 1909 - all appeared to go fine with no errors reported and the screen looked perfect after several hours. There was one problem though - the keyboard and mouse just didn't work. After a lot of investigation I concluded that none of the usb ports were working, and of course this machine had wireless/bluetooth keyboard/mouse connected via usb dongles.


Eventually I managed to uninstall the 1909 via WINRE and after much useless research on the web trying all sorts of ideas which never worked and lots of re-installs and removing of 1909 I had a bright idea. Even though the machine was useless in that I could not use it through the keyboard/mouse I suddenly realised the LAN and actually the wifi connections were working.


Now there is a nice little piece of free software from Microsoft Garage called "Mouse without Borders" - having installed this on the failing machine prior to installing 1909 and one other machine which shared the same LAN I had the ability to control the inaccessible machine from the mouse & keyboard of my working machine via my LAN after 1909 had reinstalled itself.


I was then able to go into device manager 'remotely' and saw that all USB ports on the failing machine had no driver installed as suspected. So I went to the first device with no driver and selected "update driver" and then "browse my computer for driver software" followed by "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer". I was then presented with two choices - the first was for a driver for VIA the HW manufacturer and the second for USB Microsoft I presume. I choose the latter and bingo the problem was solved and 1909 was installed and working. I did the same for all the other usb ports that showed a problem all of them in my case. And it continues to work after many reboots and there are no exclamation marks or other error symbols in device manager.


This solution may not wotk in all circumstances but if you cannot use the mouse and keyboard on your machine you may be able to borrow a laptop or other device from a friend and try this.

USB 2.0 Ports Stopped working

Hello,

I recently noticed my USB 2.0 ports have stopped working, but my USB 3.0 port is functioning perfectly.

Steps i have tried:

- Restarting

- Searching for device changes in Device manager

- running troubleshooter

all these suggested fixes didn't remedy the issue, its a bit of an inconvenience that i only have one functioning USB port

USB ports no longer work

After recent win 10 updates my USB 3.0 ports have stopped working with the arrival of build 586. USB 2.0 ports work fine and the USB 3.0 carry power but devices on any kind no longer work. I am running a Gigabyte GA-970A-Ds3p motherboard. I have downloaded
the latest USB 3.0 drivers for the board but during the installation process it terminates saying it can't find the ports. Device Manager does not show any yellow warnings or USB 3.0 entries.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Method 2: Update USB controllers.

• Right click on the Start menu and select Device Manager from the list.
  
• Narrow down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and update all the USB drivers.
  
• To update the drivers, right click on the each driver and select Update driver.
  
• If that doesn't resolve the issue, I would suggest you to uninstall all the USB drivers from the device manager.
